While it is great to see so much new interest in this area, 802.1 has already started on attempting to define VLANs and the requirements for VLAN support. So I would rather not see those who have supported 802.1 activities in the past be disenfranchised by a new initiative. I don't know which meeting room we have been assigned at the hotel so I will post it on the bulletin board by registration on Sunday night. This meeting will be a formational meeting where we will discuss as many issues as possible that we need to include in a VLAN standard. The intention is that these issues will form the discussion points for the interim meeting. There will also be a joint meeting with 802.1 at around 4:30 on Monday. I hope that we will have a charter for the ad hoc VLAN group and a motion that we will be able to present to them. I have been told that 802.1 holds all votes until Thursday so that we won't know if we have been "sanctioned" as a study group until then. There will probably be some additional meetings with 802.1, I've been told, but I have no idea when or what the subject might be. Cisco will be giving the Tuesday evening tutorial on their proposal for VLANs. This should prove to be interesting and informative. I hope that all of you will be able to attend. Rising Star Research will be hosting the first interim meeting in Denver, Colorado sometime between the end of August and the beginning of October. Check your calendards for what would be a good time for you and bring your ideas with you. The last week of September is not good as there is an Interop trade show. Look forward to seeing all of you in Hawaii. Karl Shimada
