IEEE 802.11 Archive Drafts

This page last updated: 2015-03-17 - Adrian Stephens

Introduction

This document indicates the only revisions of the IEEE 802.11 standard that are known to the IEEE 802.11 chair.

Why is there not a complete set of these drafts?

Actually this is the wrong question to ask.  IEEE-SA (Standards Association) rules indicate that the purpose of drafts is to enable standards to be developed.  Only active participants have, by right, access to such drafts.  When the project completes, such drafts have performed their purpose and former participants no longer have a means to acquire them.

Of course, former participants may have made a copy, in which case they may retain any such copy, which was theirs by right.  But their copy is still copyright by the IEEE-SA.

The existence of these early drafts is an accidental side effect of the means of distribution.  They were placed in .zip files and protected with a password.  Because of this protection, there was no urgency to remove such files from the 802.11 file server once the project was completed. However, there is not a complete set of drafts. So there was evidently inconsistency in the handling of them.  The cause of this inconsistency is lost in the mists of time.

How did we get these drafts?

The drafts on this server came from two sources:

The protected .zip files in http://www.ieee802.org/11/Documents/DocumentArchives/  contain some 802.11 drafts, either in source form, or as PDF.  The passwords were not known by the then current IEEE 802.11 officers until 2013, at which time the .zip files from the URL cited above were examined, and all the drafts extracted . Where possible, those supplied in source form were converted to PDF.

During 2014-2015, the former and founding IEEE 802.11 chair, Vic Hayes, scanned any copies of 802.11 drafts he had personally retained.  OCR was performed on these scans, retaining the original exact image, but adding searchable text.

NOTE 2 – The files are structures as a master file and component files.  While Dreft407 opens, and all the component parts are visible, an attempt to save as pdf produces an error message; an attempt to save as docx truncates before clause 8.

NOTE 3 – Scanned and OCR version from former chair’s personal archive

NOTE 4 – Document contains this notice: “The headers and footers are not correct. Page numbering partly made by hand”

NOTE 5 – This is missing Annex “C” – the state machines.
