Background

Pre-Association Discovery is a study group within the IEEE 802.11 working group that will address the problem of how a Station - STA (e.g. a Mobile Device) discovers the availability of services within the network to which another STA (e.g. an Access Point) is connected. During the July 2012 meeting, the group decided to change its name from Infrastructure Service Discovery (ISD) to Pre-Association Discovery (PAD).

Goals

The goal of this IEEE 802.11 study group is to produce an amendment to the IEEE 802.11 standard to allow a common approach to allow IEEE 802.11 STAs to discover services within external networks in a generic and standardized manner.

It is felt that this will not only help users within home, enterprise and public access markets, but also assist manufacturers and operators to provide common components and services for IEEE 802.11 customers.
