[STDS-802-11-ARC] A new approach to AP reference model for 802 O&A

--- This message came from the IEEE 802.11 ARC Reflector ---

All,

I have posted a document (https://mentor.ieee.org/802.11/dcn/13/11-13-0198-00-0arc-802rev-802-11-ap-reference-model.docx) which I intend to propose as a comment on the 802 O&A (802REV) Sponsor Ballot.

This is to address the concerns raised in recent 802.11 ARC SC sessions about the 802.11 Annex in the 802 O&A, and in particular, the “AP Reference Model” which tried to show data path forwarding of MSDUs between STAs within the BSS, across BSSs within the ESS (using the Distribution System) and via Portals.  The concerns had to do with the details of how/where we consider architectural components like SAPs and 802.1X filtering, in juxtaposition with the concepts of DS and Portals.

This new document proposes to avoid the question, for the purposes of the 802 document’s representation of the 802.11 architecture, by instead showing only a high-level conceptual view of AP, DS and Portals.

We can continue internal discussions within 802.11 about how to model AP architecture in future ARC SC sessions, and with TGak.  However, I recommend we keep that discussion out of the 802 document, at least for this round of revision, until after 802.11 has come to better understanding and agreement.

Please review the proposal, and provide any comments.  This will be discussed on the ARC SC conference call this Friday (Feb 8).

Thanks.

Mark
