Subject: Ofcom invites industry to pilot 'white space' devices

Dear all,

And in addition to what Holger mentioned:

Please be informed that the UK Regulatory Authority (OFCOM) is going to run a trial for White Space Devices (WSDs) in the UK:

http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/2013/04/ofcom-invites-industry-to-pilot-%E2%80%98white-space%E2%80%99-devices/

Depending on the outcomes of this trial that technology could be rolled out in the UK in 2014.

Considering the announcement White Space Devices aim to address the needs of machine-to-machine communications as well.

According to my understanding WSDs could address the requirements of the Wireless Automation industry. Therefore, stakeholders from the Wireless Automation industry are strongly advised to evaluate their participation to this trial and by doing so to verify whether that technology could be a promising way forward.

For more background information you may want to consult the following reports prepared by the ECC:

ECC Report 159: "Technical and operational requirements for the possible operation of cognitive radio systems in the 'white spaces' of the frequency band 470-790 MHz" (02/2011)

ECC Report 185: "Further definition of technical and operational requirements for the operation of white space devices in the band
470-790 MHz" (01/2013) - complementary report to report 159

ECC Report 186: "Technical and operational requirements for the operation of white space devices under geo-location approach" (01/2013 ) - complementary report to report 159

You can easily google these reports.

Thanks a lot for your consideration.

Kind regards,

Martin
