[STDS-802-11] Please note the TGmc proposed resolution to CIDs 7172, 7136, 7143 which proposed to make the use of the DMG OFDM mode obsolete

--- This message came from the IEEE 802.11 Working Group Reflector ---
All,

TGmc discussed and has agreed to the resolution below for the listed CIDs.
This resolution will be motioned on Thursday.

Proposed Resolution for CID 7136 and 7172 and 7143:

REVISED (GEN: 2016-03-14 06:54:27Z)at 2448.12; Insert the following in clause 20.5.1: "The use of the DMG OFDM mode is obsolete.  Consequently, this option may be removed in a later revision of the standard." This would send a signal for vendors not to implement this PHY, and would pave the way for 802.11ay to then design a proper OFDM PHY that does not exhibit the interop issue that the current OFDM PHY does.

Please let me know if you have any issues with this resolution.

Thanks,

Dorothy
---------------------------------
7136 2448.13 20.5.1 This is a pile on to CID5857. As discussed in https://mentor.ieee.org/802.11/dcn/15/11-15-1040-01-000m-dmg-unified-header.docx, compliant DMG devices that support only Control and SC modes ("SC-only" devices) will be unable to decode the OFDM mode and LPSC mode packet headers, and as a result unable to calculate the duration of these packets. This is an important interoperability issue. Propose to insert the following in clause 20.5.1: "The use of the DMG OFDM mode is deprecated." This would send a signal for vendors not to implement this PHY, and would pave the way for 802.11ay to then design a proper OFDM PHY that does not exhibit the interop issue that the current OFDM PHY does. 7143 2448.08 20.5 The is a major interoperability issue with OFDM tarnsmissions.  THe header of OFDM TX cannot be decoded by devices supporting only mandatory SC modulation.  Therefore, these devices cannot determine the duation of OFDM packets.  There are no know implemenation of devices with OFDM. deprecate OFDM.
