[STDS-802-11] Potential Deprecated/Obsolete status for (IBSS) ATIM Operation

--- This message came from the IEEE 802.11 Working Group Reflector ---
Dear 802.11 members,

In the initial SA Ballot, we received a comment requesting deletion of  (IBSS) ATIM operation, see  CID 4041 copied below.
The most recent TGmd discussion ( see page 4 https://mentor.ieee.org/802.11/dcn/20/11-20-0550-02-000m-telecon-minutes-for-revmd-crc-march-25-and-27-2020.docx ) is also below

In the TGmd CRC, we are discussing options including rejection (if implementations exist), deprecating the feature, or marking it obsolete (and subject to removal in a future revision).
Please let me know if you are aware of any implementations of this feature.

Thanks,

Dorothy

ATIM is not useful at all and gives only harm to IBSS operation.Delete ATIM operation throughout the draft.

1.1  Review doc 11-20/507 – Christopher Hansen (Presaro)

1.1.1        https://mentor.ieee.org/802.11/dcn/20/11-20-0507-00-000m-cid-4041-resolution.docx

1.1.2        CID 4041 (PHY)

1.1.2.1  Review comment

1.1.2.2  Review submission discussion

1.1.2.3  ATIMs are not useful in IBSS but are used by DMG.

1.1.2.4  Therefore, a sufficient resolution for this comment is to make sub-clause 11.2.4 obsolete and to place a notice in sub-clause 11.2.8 that power management in IBSS is obsolete.

1.1.2.5  Propose to only make the change in 11.2.8 with only the first two sentences and not any of the other changes.

1.1.2.6  Some indicate a notice in 11.2.4 does need to be made.

1.1.2.7  Put the same sentence proposed for 11.2.8 put into 11.2.4.

1.1.2.8  Discussion on if 11.2.4.1 introduction that should include deprecate/obsolete.

1.1.2.9  Discussion on the order of “deprecate” vs “obsolete”.

1.1.2.10                       Typically, the order is “deprecate” first and then “obsolete”.

1.1.2.11                      ACTION ITEM: Dorothy will put a request for Input will be put on the reflector about changing to deprecate vs obsolete

1.1.2.12                       A revision of the document will be made with today’s input and will be reviewed on a future telecon. – Target April 17, 2020 Telecon.

Additional discussion:
ATIM is the frame transmitted intermittently by STAs in an IBSS, for purpose of IBSS power save. Most of the related text is in 11.2.4 (Power management in an IBSS).
But ATIM is also used in DMG, described in 11.2.7.4 (ATIM frame usage for power management of non-AP STAs), which is part of 11.2.7 Power management in a PBSS and DMG infrastructure BSS.
Given that the comment only cites IBSS operation, it is assumed that it is not related to ATIM operation in DMG.
It is not specified what harm there is to IBSS operation.
