[STDS-802-11] Status of EAP-TLS with TLS 1.3 in the IETF EMU Working Group

--- This message came from the IEEE 802.11 Working Group Reflector ---

The IETF EMU (EAP Method Update) WG continues to advance a version of EAP-TLS for use with TLS 1.3. This Internet-Draft is titled "Using EAP-TLS with TLS 1.3" and can be found here. This specification claims backwards compatibility with the previous of EAP-TLS (RFC 5216), but it does not obsolete it.

The document was subject to a Working Group Last Call (akin to an IEEE 802 WG Letter Ballot except that there’s no voting) that closed on 20 May. The result of that call for consensus has not been made public by the WG chairs yet, but there were several lively discussion threads on the WG mailing list that would tend to indicate more work is needed. The next steps for the document will be to resolve inputs received during the WGLC and potentially hold another WGLC depending on how extensive the changes were. After that, the WG will request the IESG (a body similar to the IEEE 802 EC) to publish the specification. That will result in multiple specialist reviews, IESG review, and an IETF-wide Last Call. Once that completes, resolution of inputs and IESG positions will take place. What all of this means is that barring a lack of consensus in the WG or the IETF as a whole, the document is likely to advance to publication with the next few months.

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding the document.

                                Kind regards,

                                -Peter Yee
