I too is of the same opinion -- header hec for pass-though forwarding or
drop decision; application level CRC or whatever the application desires.

   yes.  However this could be still be done at the application level for
the specifc application.
Some applications that can tolerate higher bit errors they can consume the
packet without crc.

I think, in variable sized packet based network, CRC plays a very important
role. It may be noted that at TCP level, all we have is checksum.
