Re: [Fwd: Are you aware of this?]

"Advanced" makes everyone at present appear "remedial."
Most "advanced" concepts stay advanced and never become relevant
for the present. So will AFN.

This paper is a verbose, authorless, irresponsible,
gibberish I have seen so far on this subject.

It quotes 802.3 - so I am assuming the dot3 veterans will
have indigestions.
Quoting from the paper:
"It is a network that, as a result of a series of (continuing)
innovations made to simple, standards-based Ethernet technologies,
can be propagated for a hundred miles without "regeneration",
as compared to tens of yards that was the maximum possible in the
recent past."

The paper mentions the conclusion are from IEEE-USA after meetings
and analysis. I know little about it and how it was done but certainly have
an opinion on the thesis of this paper as an IEEE member.

IEEE has yet to establish credibility in developing standards for
global, public, telecommunication infrastructure.
Papers like these erode any credibility built so far by IEEE in the telecommunications
sector. It still is a far stretch of an imagination to consider IEEE as
an authority on public networks after just having a few notches on their
belt by standardizing private LANs. Certainly, no known track record and
qualification to do public economic analysis and present reforms.

Also, quoting form the paper:
" Should either a regional ILEC or a cable modem supplier
achieve dominance in a region, it is likely that under Metcalfe's
Law, the "network effects" would result in the party achieving perhaps
even an early plurality, then quickly sweeping to establish a dominant
market share: the resurgence of monopoly is the likely result."

Unfortunately, the paper does not quote from where such "network effect"
and thesis is derived from about Metcalf.

I wish to register my absolute dissatisfaction and indignation at IEEE for making public
pronouncements without agreement from its memberships, especially the thought leaders
in this space.
