RE: [802.21] L2 Requirements for 802.11

Vivek,

Sorry I wasn't able to make the call - some general comments:

1) Before you ask 802.11 to comment, I think you need to have taken a decision how your data elements and protocol or protocols will be transported. Will it be a technology independant mechanism (e.g. ethertype distinguished protocol in data frames) or one that is different for every technology (e.g. 802.11 action frames). If you need a mixture, you need to clearly say which method is being used for which protocol.

2) I think there needs to be thought about how any data frame based protocol fits into the 802.1X model - if you're using a technology independant transfer, then you need to fit into the technology independant architecture.

3) You can learn a lot from the way 802.1D specifies protocol dependant SAPs - it specifies the SAP, and names the parameters, and then describes the parameters separately where their content varies. Just listing a lot of information and asking the wireless groups to define a SAP to get it probably won't get you very far.

4) There needs to be much greater specification of where the data flows from (e.g. "From the AP, to the STA") and when (e.g. "during the network advertisment phase"). You probably also need to define these phases in a technology independant way("Network Advertisment", "Joining", "Authentication" and "Data Transfer" spring to mind a snames...)

5) It may be that one of your first actions should be to ask 802.11 which information elements are already transported or inferable. When asking you need to make it clear what information you need, and where (i.e. AP or STA).

It's a good start, but there's clearly a lot of work still to do.

Mike.

Please find attached an updated requirements/amendments document for discussion tomorrow.

Agenda:

-Discuss Requirements : 30 mins

-Discuss 802.11 Information Elements : 30 mins

-Discuss suggested Amendments : 60 mins

If anyone has any other inputs for this document or any other topics/items they would like to see discussed please lemme know.

Best Regards
