Re: [802.3_4PPOE] Yair's presentations for January 2017 IEEE802.3bt meeting

Sending this again; repeater denied due to a couple confidentiality agreements.

Hey Yair,

Thanks for generating all this content. I'd like to address darshan_01.

On the whole, there's a lot of good work here in promoting important parts of the spec into Clause 33 and maintaining supporting text in informative annex 33b.

I would like to help improve the 2 "shall" statements you've created in Clause 33:

"Conformance with Equation (33–15) shall be met for RPSE_max and RPSE_min."
I'm not sure what this "shall" is meant to do. My understanding of the PSE unbalance requirements is, given a defined "worst-case" fixture (composed of Rload_min, Rload_max, and P_Class_PD measured at "PD PI"), the PSE shall not exceed ICon-2p-unb,min on any pairset as defined by your 33.2.8.1.1. This "worst-case" fixture you have created is testable at PSE PI and based on good data. In that case, I believe it is redundant to enforce an internal PSE parameter and I propose you strike this "shall". That way, we can maintain all the informative design guidelines for R_pse as specified in Annex 33B, but the conformance guidelines are based on 33.2.8.5.1.1. This allows for best PSE design flexibility.

"RPSE_max, RPSE_min and ICon-2P-unb shall be measured determined according to with the tests model specified in 33.2.8.5.1.1. "
I believe your intent for this statement is in the right place. I believe you're trying to say "PSEs which meet the requirements of 33.2.8.5.1.1 conform with all PSE unbalance requirements." However, what you've really said here is "PSE test houses shall use this test method to measure (not confirm, just measure) PSE unbalance parameters". First, we can't specify test methods. Second, this shall does not prove conformance, it only specifies measurement. I propose you replace this shall with "Current unbalance requirements (ICon−2P−unb) of a PSE shall be met with Rload_max and Rload_min as specified by 33.2.8.5.1.1."

I think my 2 proposed changes are in line with your intent for this text. I would love to speak more with you about this at the meeting. When you have a moment, please feel free to find me and discuss.

Thanks!

Cheers,
David Stover II
