[802.3_EXTND_EPON] Overview of IEEE-SA Sponsor Ballot

Dear colleagues,

Wael Diab, Vice Chair of 802.3 Working Group, provided a presentation with an overview of the Sponsor Ballot process. The material was uploaded to our meeting website and it is available at the following direct URL: http://www.ieee802.org/3/bk/public/1303/8023bk_1303_diab_01.pdf. If you want to register for the Sponsor Ballot group for P802.3bk, below you can find a copy of the announcement email. Note that the invitation to join the Sponsor Ballot group expires on the 27th of March. The instructions presented in the invitation is very detailed (IMHO) and should allow you to follow the registration process without any problems.

If you have any questions or come across any problems with the registration, please contact myself or Wael, and we will provide answers as soon as possible. We are also available through closing plenary meeting on Thursday to answer any questions you might have, if you prefer to talk to any of us and go through the registration process together.

***** SPONSOR BALLOT INVITATION *****

You have indicated an interest in balloting IEEE Standards documents.

IMPORTANT! To participate, you must have access to myProject through an IEEE Web Account.

If you would like to participate in IEEE Standards Sponsor Ballot P802.3bk

Title: IEEE Standard for Ethernet

Amendment: Physical Layer Specifications and Management Parameters for Extended Ethernet Passive Optical Networks you must enroll as a member of the ballot group by 27-Mar-2013, 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.

***** IEEE STANDARD DOCUMENT INFORMATION *****

The IEEE Computer Society Society/IEEE Standard for Ethernet   Amendment: Physical Layer Specifications and Management Parameters for Extended Ethernet Passive Optical Networks invites you to participate in the New Sponsor Ballot for:

P802.3bk

Title: IEEE Standard for Ethernet

Amendment: Physical Layer Specifications and Management Parameters for Extended Ethernet Passive Optical Networks

Scope: This standard defines Ethernet local area, access and metropolitan area networks. Ethernet is specified at selected speeds of operation; and uses a common media access control (MAC) specification and management information base (MIB). The Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) MAC protocol specifies shared medium (half duplex) operation, as well as full duplex operation. Speed specific Media Independent Interfaces (MIIs) provide an architectural and optional implementation interface to selected Physical Layer entities (PHY). The Physical Layer encodes frames for transmission and decodes received frames with the modulation specified for the speed of operation, transmission medium and supported link length. Other specified capabilities include: control and management protocols, and the provision of power over selected twisted pair PHY types.

Purpose: The purpose of this project is to extend the optical loss budgets supported by Ethernet Passive Optical Networks to support higher density and longer reach applications, while optimizing costs of ownership.

***** ENROLLMENT INSTRUCTIONS *****

If you are an IEEE-SA member:

Go directly to:

https://development.standards.ieee.org/my-site/open-ballot-invitations

Or, follow this process:

1. Log onto myProject; click the link for myBallot.

2. Click the link for myBallot (if applicable); click the link for "Show/Join Open Ballot Invitations":  https://development.standards.ieee.org/my-site/open-ballot-invitations

3.  Scroll down until you find the open ballot group of interest to you; then scroll over to the right margin and click "join" under the "Actions" column.

4.  Enter or select an affiliation from the drop down menu (appearing as you key in your affiliation in the Organization window), select your classification category, and click "OK" at the bottom of the screen.  You will receive an on-screen confirmation that you successfully joined the group.

If you are not an IEEE SA Member:

You can either enroll in a single ballot by paying a per ballot fee or you can join the IEEE SA by choosing an option link below.  Joining the IEEE SA entitles you to participate in as many sponsor ballots as you like for the year.

OPTION 1 - I am already an IEEE Member and I want to add Standards Association Membership. Go to: http://www.ieee.org/membership_services/index.html

OPTION 2 - I am not an IEEE Member but would like to enroll in both IEEE and IEEE Standards Association. Go to: http://www.ieee.org/membership_services/membership/join/index.html

OPTION 3 - I am not interested in becoming an IEEE Member, however I would like to enroll as a Standards Association Member only. Go to: http://standards.ieee.org/sa-mem/join.html

OBLIGATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF BALLOTERS

Balloting group members have an obligation to respond during the balloting period; failure to return a ballot may disqualify the balloter from participation in future balloting groups.

Once the document is ready to be balloted, you will receive notification via email.  You will typically have 30 days to review the document and return the ballot with your vote.  By agreeing to participate in this ballot you have an *obligation* to respond.  Failure to return a completed ballot may disqualify you from participating in future ballots.

Thank you for your interest in this ballot.
