Yes, I understood where you were going with the logic and generally
agree. I was just concerned that there seemed to be an underlying
assumption in many of the reflector messages that layer 2 devices would
perform frame dropping based solely on priority. Which, wouldn't
necessarily do the right thing for the upper layers.

One way of avoiding inappropriate frame drops in the small
well-constrained networks would be to utilize rate control (i.e.
backpressure) and not drop frames at layer 2 (leaving that
responsibility to layer 3). Then the question becomes, how big and less
constrained can a layer 2 subnet get before avoiding frame drops all
together at layer 2 is no longer an acceptable solution?

I'm assuming layer 2 CM will have to factor in the need to drop frames
under some conditions and to drop the most appropriate frames given the
upper layer requirements. The question I still don't have an answer for
(maybe 802.1ad will provide it) is, how do the upper layers communicate
to layer 2 which packets are most appropriate to drop? By priority
mapping? Hmmm... If so, then I'm still little confused.

I understand that there are different types of traffic and that these
different types require different network capabilities. Some desire
loss-less traffic, others can tolerate losses but those packets that
arrive need low latency. Perhaps I was being too general in my
question/comment. I could substitute dropped frames for low latency. I
could probably choose a better term than "highest priority". Each DSCP
or 802.1 priority could have different characteristics and I'll presume
bridges know the difference.

However, I think the point stands. DiffServ classifies data. 802.1
provides a way of prioritizing these classifications into different
queues with different queue-emptying algorithms and ways of favoring
priorities. It would seem advantageous to be able to share buffer
congestion information between bridges across links in order to enable a
better picture of the state of the layer 2 network.

While the round-trip latency of large, unconstrained networks may
inhibit the feasibility of this, it seems quite likely that small, well-
constrained networks should be able to make good use of this capability.
