[802.3_DIALOG] July 2015 plenary meeting notice

Dear Colleagues,

IEEE 802.3 will meet Monday 13th July through Thursday 16th July 2015 in Waikoloa, HI, USA. The IEEE 802.3 meetings are scheduled to occur in the Hilton Waikoloa Village, Waikoloa, HI, USA. As always, the IEEE 802 LMSC session announcement, registration and current hotel information can be found through the 'Next IEEE 802 Plenary session notice' link on our home web page <www.ieee802.org/3>. To receive email updates and reminders for the plenary sessions, subscribe to the stds-802-ALL reflector <http://listserv.ieee.org>.

The IEEE 802.3 working group (WG) opening plenary meeting will begin at 10:00 on Monday 13th July, and the IEEE 802.3 WG closing plenary meeting will begin at 13:00 on Thursday 16th July. Task Force (TF), Study Group (SG), standing committee and any appropriate ad hoc meetings will be scheduled between the opening and closing IEEE 802.3 meetings as illustrated in our typical schedule also found on our web site <http://www.ieee802.org/3/plenary.html>. The draft agenda, as well as liaison letters received so far, are available in the minutes area <http://www.ieee802.org/3/minutes/jul15/index.html> and will be updated as required prior to the meeting. The agenda will be approved at the meeting.

We will gather two records of attendance, the attendance tracking tool and attendance books in each meeting. The attendance tool will be the only official record of attendance for building and maintaining WG membership. The meeting attendance books will be used to record the attendance in the minutes for each meeting and it is important that you review these minutes to make sure your attendance is recorded correctly as this will be the backup should there be an issue with the attendance tool.

Attendance credit toward membership requires attendance at three of the four days of the IEEE 802.3 session, independent of how long a particular TF or SG might be meeting. The attendance tracking tool will only allow sign in on Monday at the opening IEEE 802.3 plenary and on Thursday at the closing IEEE 802.3 plenary meeting (not during the Monday afternoon or Thursday morning meetings). A number of WG decisions are expected during the IEEE 802.3 meetings (most on Thursday during the closing meeting). Depending on the amount of discussion, the Thursday closing meeting may run beyond our target 18:00 ending time, so please plan your travel accordingly.

Additional subgroup information follows. Information for contacting Task Force chairs, and archival project information can be found on our web site: <www.ieee802.org/3>. Please note that the IEEE P802.3by 25Gb/s Ethernet and Task Force will be holding a short interim meeting on the Monday morning prior to the IEEE 802.3 Opening plenary.

I look forward to seeing you in Waikoloa, HI, USA.

Next Generation Ethernet Passive Optical Networking (NG-EPON) call for interest
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CFI page: <http://ieee802.org/3/cfi/request_0715_1.html>

The following request for agenda time for an NG-EPON call for interest has been received from Curtis Knittle. It will be discussed at the IEEE 802 LMSC July 2015 Plenary meeting in Waikoloa, HI, USA.

-----

The volume of traffic in residential and business access networks continues to increase, driven by the combination of growing number of subscribers, numbers of devices per subscriber, and innovative applications requiring more bandwidth. It is expected that in the next 2-3 years, the combined bandwidth demand from residential and business applications will surpass the capabilities of existing 1G-EPON and 10G-EPON PHYs. Service providers that have invested in EPON now spearhead the industry drive to develop the next generation of access technology that would offer increased capacities and seamless upgrade capabilities. The Next Generation EPON (NG-EPON) Call for Interest, to be held at the July plenary meeting in Hawaii, will present the market drivers and potentially-relevant recent technical advancements, and will request the formation of a study group to further explore the next generation of EPON technology.

-----

The call for interest will take place during the IEEE 802.3 Opening Plenary on the morning of Monday 13th July. A call for interest consensus building meeting has been scheduled to occur from 18:00 to 19:30 on the evening of Tuesday 14th July. The vote to determine if a Study Group will be formed will take place at the IEEE 802.3 Closing Plenary on the afternoon of Thursday 16th July.

2.5 Gb/s and 5 Gb/s Ethernet Backplane and Short Reach Copper Cable call for interest
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CFI page: <http://www.ieee802.org/3/cfi/request_0715_2.html>

The following request for agenda time for a 2.5 Gb/s and 5 Gb/s Ethernet Backplane and Short Reach Copper Cable call for interest has been received from Yong Kim.

----

This is a call for interest to initiate a Study Group to explore the need for 2.5 Gb/s and 5 Gb/s Ethernet on Backplane and short reach copper (e.g.Twin-axial) cabling. We believe there is a market need, driven by enterprise rotational and solid state storage devices that currently use 1 G Ethernet to migrate to higher speed applications.

Devices currently using 1G in backplanes, as well as other 1 Gb/s applications for Ethernet, will also benefit from the new data rates provided by this work.

----

The call for interest will take place during the IEEE 802.3 Opening Plenary on the morning of Monday 13th July. A call for interest consensus building meeting has been scheduled to occur from 19:30 to 21:00 on the evening of Tuesday 14th July. The vote to determine if a Study Group will be formed will take place at the IEEE 802.3 Closing Plenary on the afternoon of Thursday 16th July.

----------------

At the March 2015 plenary we discussed a proposed revision to the IEEE 802.3 operating rules. It is expected that a vote will occur at the IEEE 802.3 closing plenary to decide if the change should be accepted, rejected or sent out for a Working Group ballot. For details see <http://ieee802.org/3/minutes/mar15/0315_rules_close_report.pdf#Page=8>.

Tutorials
---------

IEEE 802 Tutorials web page: <http://www.ieee802.org/Tutorials.shtml>

Session #1, Monday 18:00 to 19:30
Title: IEEE 802.11 as a component
Abstract: At present, there are no standardized “concrete” interfaces that allow an 802.11 STA to be managed. The MIB in 802.11 is not fit for purpose. The value of allowing 802.11 STAs to be effectively managed is increasing, given the goal of increased convergence with heterogonous communications technologies, such as cellular. This tutorial describes an opportunity to improve this situation.

Session #2, Monday 19:30 to 21:00
Title: IEEE-SA 2015 patent policy update
Abstract: Updates to the IEEE-SA Patent Policy (Clause 6 of the IEEE-SA Standards Board Bylaws) became effective on 15th March 2015. While the text relating directly to conduct and responsibilities of participants within IEEE standards development groups has not been updated, this tutorial will provide an overview of the areas that were updated.

Session #3, Monday 21:00 to 22:30
