Re: [802.3_EPOC] Letter for China operarors

Dear EPOC SG,
An issue was raised yesterday about the translation of the last paragraph regarding synergizing EPOC and HiNOC.

I have since determined that Alex Liu (Qualcomm) translated the letter on behalf of the Chinese group.

Accordingly, I requested Eugene to directly clarify the said translation issue with Alex directly. The self-explanatory email exchange is below. Based on this I recommend we interpret the said text as Eugene translated - that the Chinese group is proposing a unification of EPOC and HiNOC as opposed to a common chipset (which was Alex's interpretation as explained below). If anyone else had any other issues with the letter please email Alex so that he can clarify or get clarification from the Chinese group.

That being said, I will compile shortly all inputs I have received from the SG and send out a draft response to be discussed at the ad-hoc over lunch today. The final response will be determined after we go through the motions in the afternoon with modifications as appropriate. We will follow the guidelines that Howard sent out.

Based on responses so far the ad-hoc is:

Jorge, Chano, Marek, Eugene, Bill (Powell), Matt, John (Egan). We will meet over lunch and again at the end of the afternoon session.

Eugene,

Fully agreed. My translation is not a literal one. If you wish to change the English to reflect the "unified standard" wording in Chinese, I will assent.

I was trying to temper expectations on what could actually be achieved between HiNOC and EPoC. HiNOC is pursuing their own path in ITU, and it will be challenging to actually achieve one standard.

I thought a common chipset between the two standards could be a compromise goal.

Please check the translation of the following, the translation does not seems match with the original.

Thanks,
Eugene

(3)	HiNOC and EPoC
The relationship between HiNOC, the indigenous Chinese Next Generation Broadcast (NGB) cable access standard, and EPoC is an important factor to consider in crafting the EPoC standard. We strongly believe that harmonization between EPoC and HiNOC would be highly beneficial to the global industry, as the possibility of having chipsets that support both EPoC and HiNOC would lower costs for the entire supply chain, right on up through to the operators. The HiNOC standard is TDMA/TDD, a fact which we hope will be taken in account in the IEEE.*

Hi Eugene,
I just found out that Alex Liu translated the letter. Can you please reply all and explain the discrepancy you brought up in the translation so Alex can clarify.
Thanks,
Rajeev

Alex,
The English version is suggesting that if HiNOC and EPOC are harmonized then the chipset costs would be reduced delivering economic benefit. Eugene raised an issue that the Chinese text does not talk about chipsets at all but only talks about economic benefits of unifying the HiNOC and EPOC standard (without mentioning chipsets explicitly). Assuming Eugene is correct, perhaps you can explain the purpose of the re-interpretation of the Chinese text to include “chipset” in the English text.

I know its late for you but would appreciate an answer today as we are trying to formulate a response. Also if you are aware of any other literal differences between the Chinese and English text, please let us know with appropriate explanation.

Thanks,
Rajeev
