My point has nothing whatsoever to do with whether or not the registry can 
stand it (and as you observe, it clearly can), nor with whether the 802 
attendees at the dinner are paying registration fees (which they clearly are).

The point is that to the rest of the 802 attendees (that are paying a 
registration fee, but are not invited to the dinner), this will look like a 
freebie to a privileged few, at predominantly their expense (not ours), and 
with microscopically thin justification (other than that the few are in a 
position to make the decision to do it).

The justification for covering the expense of feeding our guests is clear

At least with cookies, there is nominally equal access to all that end up 
paying the tab.
