Re: [802SEC] ITU Conformity Data Base

Dear EC,

Roger has pointed out an ITU press release that says the ITU Council did approve doing this. However, the tone in other meetings (outside of IEEE 802) has been that it wasn't.

Regardless, the point remains; is this something that is good (or not) for the IT industry?

Regards,

Mike

Dear EC,

I think that this could be of interest to a number of IEEE 802 participants.

Mike

Dear RR-TAG,

You will remember that in 2009 we discussed efforts to develop an "ITU mark" to certify equipment. I remember that for the most part the participants in those discussions did not support the concept of an "ITU mark". To a degree this message seems to announce the beginning of such a project.

My understanding is that the ITU Council, at their most recent meeting, had told the TSB (ITU-T) not to proceed with the database. I expect that a number of Administrations will be objecting to this database going on line. If it does proceed then I don't see how various telecommunications equipment vendors can ignore it.

I'll provide updates as more data becomes available.

Regards,

Mike

Dear friends,

We would like to thank all of you for your earlier advice, upon which TSB has developed the ITU Conformity Database. That database is freely accessible and is to be populated by both ITU members and non-members, on a voluntary and free-of-charge basis, with products that have been successfully tested by third parties against the specifications within ITU Recommendations.

The information in the database is that provided by those making declarations of compliance for their products (SDoC ISO/IEC 17050-1). TSB has decided to organize the classification of the product categories based upon the "United Nations Standard Products and Services Code(r)" database, which is a globally used classification hierarchy for products and services that is owned by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). By taking advantage of this classification system, ITU allows declarations associated with the standard designation used in the realm of international commerce, easing the search of compliant products and providing more benefit for the supplier community that chooses to participate.

The information that will be shown in the conformity database is:

- Company and contact identifying information

- Product name, as identified and marketed by the supplier

- Product category, as classified within the UNSPSC described above

- ITU -T Recommendations whose conformity is being declared

- Identification of the third party to have tested or certified the conformity

- ITU -T code, to uniquely identify the entry in the database (Note: a declaration is limited to being associated with a single product.)

- Image of the signed SDoC (Supplier's Declaration of Conformity)

We intend to make the database web page live on the 21st of January. Please let me know if you have any additional comments about the set of information being collected .

I take the occasion to wish all of you an excellent new year.

Thank you very much,

Paolo
