Re: [802SEC] ITU Conformity Database

What the ITU is doing seems to be remote from being in the "conformity assesment business" or from giving a "mark". From what I see here, they aren't certifying the products or the conformity test houses. They are only providing a place to register that you have had conformity tests done on a product by someone. The registration is only as credible as the laboratory or certification body that is entered by the product owner.

I note that it says "Accredited Laboratory" and "Accredited Certification Body". Who is doing the accreditation?

EC Colleagues-

I would urge you to pay close attention to this initiative as well as
doing some consciousness raising with your employers as to the direction
in which this is appearing to go. It could have significant cost and
competitive impact on the networking business.

At the current level (from a 2 minute inspection) it would appear to be
pretty weak, perhaps not even as strong as if we had a database of
filled in PICS from 802 vendors.

This is all the more worthy of our attention because the IEEE-SA has
also been talking about getting into the "conformity assessment"
business (as a new source of revenue). I would expect that the IEEE-SA
would view this sort of move by the ITU as further
pressure/justification/rationale for the SA to enter this area. I would
hope that 802 would have some input/influence on SA initiatives in this
area (but I have my doubts once the SA gets the bit in its teeth on an
idea).

My personal opinion is that there is massive opportunity for conflict of
interest (or appearance thereof) on the part of an SDO to be in the
conformity assesment business.

Best regards,

Geoff
