Re: [802SEC] IEEE Standards Due for Maintenance in 2010 - C/LM

Paul-

We have already completed our decision on what to do about

802.2-1989 (R2003) IEEE Standard for Information Technology - Telecommunications and Information Exchange Between Systems - Local and Metropolitan Area Networks - Specific Requirements - Part 2: Logical Link Control
[Also: 802.2a-1993 (R2003); 802.2b-1993 (R2003); 802.2c-1997(R2003); 802.2d-1993 (R2003); 802.2e-1993 (R2003); 802.2f-1997 (R2003); 802.2h-1997 (R2003)]

If you will recall, action was taken at JTC1 to stabilize the ISO version ISO/IEC 8802-2. This has the advantage that (unlike IEEE) once something is "stabilized" it is in that state forever with no future requirements whatsoever for maintenance or review.

Thus we can (and, in fact decided to) let 802.2 be withdrawn without opposition whenever the SA gets a Roundtuit.

The only remaining action in 802 is that all active 802 standards should change any references that they may have to IEEE Std 802.2 to refer instead to ISO/IEC 8802-2.

Each Working Group should take an action item to put in a Maintenance Request against all of their active standards to change such references.

Subject: IEEE Standards Due for Maintenance in 2010 - C/LM

2 February 2010

Paul Nikolich,

C/LM has some standards that are due for a 5-year maintenance action by the end of 2010. In accordance with the IEEE-SA Standards Board Operations Manual, Section 9, standards are approved for five years and the Sponsor is required to take a maintenance action by the end of that period. The following are your options:

a) reaffirm
b) revise
c) stabilize
d) extend
e) withdraw

You can find more information about these options at http://standards.ieee.org/guides/opman/sect9.html

Please notify me of your intended action by 18 October 2010, the submittal deadline for the December 2010 Standards Board Meeting Series. If I do not receive a response, the standards in question will be placed on the agenda for administrative withdrawal.

If the Sponsor chooses to revise, reaffirm, or stabilize the standard but will not be able to complete the process by the October submittal deadline, please send me an email to a) request an extension of the existing standard and b) provide information about the actions that are being taken. Please also provide estimates for when the reaffirmation will be submitted or, in case of revision, when the PAR will be submitted and when you anticipate completing the revision project.

If there is no further interest in a standard and the Sponsor wishes it to be withdrawn, no ballot is required. The standard will be administratively withdrawn in December 2010. (Please notify me if the Sponsor decides that a standard should be withdrawn. Also, please note that standards that have been administratively withdrawn can no longer be reinstated via reaffirmation. In order to reinstate an administratively withdrawn standard, a PAR has to be submitted.)

The standards in question are:

802.1H-1995 (R2001) Local and Metropolitan Area Networks: IEEE Recommended Practice for Media Access Control (MAC) Bridging of Ethernet Version 2.0 in 802 Local Area Networks
802.1Q-2005 IEEE Standard for Local and Metropolitan Area Networks---Virtual Bridged Local Area Networks
[Also: 802.1ad-2005, 802.1Q-2005/Cor1-2008, 802.1Qav-2009, 802.1Qaw-2009, 802.1Qay-2009]

802.2-1989 (R2003) IEEE Standard for Information Technology - Telecommunications and Information Exchange Between Systems - Local and Metropolitan Area Networks - Specific Requirements - Part 2: Logical Link Control
[Also: 802.2a-1993 (R2003); 802.2b-1993 (R2003); 802.2c-1997(R2003); 802.2d-1993 (R2003); 802.2e-1993 (R2003); 802.2f-1997 (R2003); 802.2h-1997 (R2003)]

802.16.2-2004 Local and Metropolitan Area Networks - Recommended Practice for Coexistence of Fixed Broadband Wireless Access Systems

Please let me know if you have any questions.
