[802SEC] IEEE P802.3bg draft PAR and 5 Criteria - Physical Layer and Management Parameters for Serial 40 Gb/s Ethernet Operation Over Single Mode Fiber

Dear EC members,

In support of subclause 12.2 'LMSC Approval' of the LMSC Operations Manual
(30 day rule) please find below the required information in respect to the
IEEE P802.3bg Physical Layer and Management Parameters for Serial 40 Gb/s
Ethernet Operation Over Single Mode Fiber PAR for consideration at the
March 2010 plenary.

Best regards,
  David

IEEE P802.3bg Standard for Information technology--Telecommunications and
information exchange between systems--Local and metropolitan area
networks--Specific requirements Part 3: Carrier Sense Multiple Access with
Collision Detection (CSMA/CD) Access Method and Physical Layer
Specifications
Amendment: Physical Layer and Management Parameters for Serial 40 Gb/s
Ethernet Operation Over Single Mode Fiber

[1] Draft PAR and 5C:

Draft PAR [ http://www.ieee802.org/3/40GSMF/40GESMF_SG_PAR_0110.pdf ].
Draft 5C [
http://www.ieee802.org/3/40GSMF/40GESMF_SG_5C_responses_0110.pdf ].

[2] Explanatory technical background material:

This project is to amend IEEE Std 802.3 to provide a 40 Gb/s serial PMD
that supports a link distance of at least 2km over single-mode fiber that
is optically compatible with existing carrier 40Gb/s client interfaces
(OTU3/STM-256/OC-768/40G Packet over SONET (POS)), which will enable
interconnection between equipment in carrier networks or as uplink
interconnections from enterprises, data centers, or other network
operators into carrier networks.

[3] Work plan for the development of managed object definitions:

The project will include a protocol independent specification of managed
objects with SNMP management capability to be provided in the future by an
amendment to the yet-to-be-approved IEEE P802.3.1 Ethernet MIBs.

[4] Status of the development of the PAR:

The PAR and 5C drafts are pending IEEE 802.3 Working Group approval at the
March Plenary. Since the submission deadline for the March NesCom meeting
(12th February) occurs prior to the date of the March IEEE 802 EC meeting,
I will pre-submit this draft PAR to NesCom on the understanding that:

[a] Any changes to the draft PAR text resulting from the Plenary will be
promptly communicated to the NesCom Administrator.
[b] Should the IEEE 802.3 Working Group not approve the submission, it
will be removed from the IEEE 802 Executive Committee and NesCom agenda.
[c] Should the IEEE 802 Executive Committee not approve the submission,
it will be removed from the NesCom agenda.
