Geoff,

I agree that this would be an appropriate item to discuss on the EC Con Call.

I don't quite agree about the ASN.1 tutorials. In my understanding, the rationale for giving those tutorials was that ASN.1 is used in our standards. Therefore, we need editors and reviewers who understand ASN.1 in order to produce quality documents. This would be similar to a tutorial session to train participants in the use of our Access comment tool or editing our documents in FrameMaker. Such tutorials serve the tutorial purpose in the chair's guideline "Describe basic 802 or other standards process." They involve teaching people about using a commercial tool that some part of 802 uses for development of our standards.

(However, I wasn't able to attend either ASN.1 tutorial so I don't know whether anything in the tutorials went beyond teaching about using a tool for creating our standards.)

I believe that we already have made that step with the ASN.1 tutorials that we had last year.  They were on a relevant standards topic but were based on a commercial product.  I believe those two tutorial were highly useful but I have to confess that (ignoring the usefulness of the content) they were over the line.

Thus I believe that the decision should be based on:
   1) A review by the EC of the success or failure of the ASN.1 tutorials.
   2) A review of our criteria based on #1
   3) Only then consider the NetFGPA tutorial.
We could also consider something other than a 90 minute Monday tutorial slot (as was done with ASN.1)

Seems to me like this is an appropriate agenda item for the EC Con Call.
