Re: [802SEC] [802-ARCH] Definition of provider bridging

All

We have the following suggestions:

1) provider bridging: The use of Provider Bridges to offer its
customers protocol-transparent connectivity. See: IEEE Std 802.1Q-2011.
(combined Thaler/Johansson proposal)

2) provider bridging: the use a virtual bridged local area network to provide separate instances of the IEEE 802(r) MAC service, MAC internal, and enhanced internal sublayer services to multiple
independent customers. (Hamilton)

3) provider bridging: The carriage of local area networks (LANs), bridged LANs, or virtual bridged LANs, typically by a service provider, over provider bridges or backbone edge bridges. See: IEEE Std 802.1Q-2011. (Finn with edits by me)

I am leaning toward 1). Alternatively, we can reject the comment and simply state that the definition of provider bridging is contained in the text of 5.3.2.5 and attempting to define it here would either a) put in the "wrong" definition as it would be different from the one in 801.Q or b) repeat the 802.1Q definition, which does not make sense without understanding the rest of the 802.1Q standard and hence it is not self-contained.

BTW: As an alternative to "See: IEEE Std 802.1Q-2011" we could put in:
NOTE - Provider bridging is defined in IEEE Std 802.1Q-2011.

I looked at the usage of the term "provider bridging" in the document. I think that clause 5.3.2.5 could be summarized as:

Provider Bridging: The carriage of LANs, bridged LANs, or virtual bridged LANs, typically by a service provider, over Provider Bridges (802.1Q-2011 Clause 5.10) or Backbone Edge Bridges (802.1Q-2011 Clause 5.11).

James, the definitions you offer are awfully circular for my taste. Also, in
my exposure to IEEE standards, it's not customary to cite normative
references in the glossary--- but I freely grant you this may be my own,
parochial viewpoint.

That said, I have a very minor proposal to improve some of the language:
change "customer protocol transparent connectivity" to "its customers
protocol-transparent connectivity".

We have an editorial comment in the draft requesting that we add a
definition for provider bridging. My suggestion is to add the following
definition:

provider bridging: A network using that uses Provider Bridges to offer
customer protocol transparent connectivity. See: IEEE 802.1Q-2011."

For reference, 802.Q-2011 defines the following (among other terms)

3.138 Provider Bridge: An S-VLAN Bridge or a Provider Edge Bridge.

3.139 Provider Bridged Network: A network using Provider Bridges to offer
customer protocol transparent connectivity.

3.140 Provider Edge Bridge: A system comprising a single S-VLAN component
and one or more CVLAN components implemented in accordance with Clause 5 of
IEEE Std 802.1Q.

Opinions?
