Re: [802SEC] 802.15 responses to comments received on the 15.4 Revision PAR

Jon

You could also include for context the following scope and purpose from another revision PAR submitted for consideration at this meeting.

Scope: "The scope of this standard is to define one medium access control (MAC) and several physical layer (PHY) specifications for wireless connectivity for fixed, portable, and moving stations (STAs) within a local area."

Purpose: "The purpose of this standard is to provide wireless connectivity for fixed, portable, and moving stations within a local area. This standard also offers regulatory bodies a means of standardizing access to one or more frequency bands for the purpose of local area communication."

No specific bands or geographic regions are specified in the Scope or Purpose of this other revision PAR that has been submitted for consideration by the IEEE 802 Executive Committee.

I under the impression that the standard with this scope and purpose is a very well-written and is quite successful in the market.

So perhaps it is not necessary to list all of the bands in the scope or purpose?

Thanks for your time.

Hi Jon

To put this all in context., the scope of 15.4-2015 is: This standard
defines the physical layer (PHY) and *medium* access control (MAC)
sublayer specifications for low-data-rate wireless connectivity with
fixed, portable, and moving devices with no battery or very limited
battery consumption requirements. In addition, the standard provides modes
that allow for precision ranging. PHYs are defined for devices operating *various
license-free bands *in a variety of geographic regions. The scope of this
revision makes 2 changes. It corrects medum to media and deletes "various
license free bands" from the last sentence (both highlighted in red). The
result (which does indeed reflect reality) is: This standard defines the
physical layer (PHY) and *media* access control (MAC) sublayer
specifications for low-data-rate wireless connectivity with fixed,
portable, and moving devices with no battery or very limited battery
consumption requirements. In addition, the standard provides modes that
allow for precision ranging. PHYs are defined for devices operating in a
variety of geographic regions. BR

The 802.11 PAR Review SC has the following rebuttal for 802.15 to consider
for their 802.15.4 PAR:

Rebuttal comment to 802.15.4 Revision:
802.11 comment:
5.2 adding “and other†seems to change the scope significantly.  The
change seems to allow any band.

Suggest to delete “and other†from the scope or alternatively identify
what are the “other bands†.

802.15 Response:
Accept-in-principle; delete “operating in various license-exempt and
other bands†resulting in “PHYs are defined for devices operating in a
variety of geographic regions.â€

802.11 Rebuttal:
The response does not address the concern of including “Any band†.Â
We would like to not have the scope expand without definition or bounds.
The phrase “devices operating in a variety of geographic regions†does
not provide any information.
