[802SEC] IEEE 802.11bc and IEEE 802.11bd draft PAR and CSD Response documents for EC consideration at the upcoming November 2018 plenary



Dear EC members,

 

The 802.11 Working Group has 2 PAR and 2 CSD document for EC consideration during the upcoming November 2018 plenary.

This email notification is sent with the required 30 day advance notice (Subclause 9.2 'IEEE 802 LMSC Approval' of the LMSC Operations Manual)

 

The PAR/CSD documents were approved by the 802.11 WG at its recently concluded September 2018 interim session.

 

1.       Broadcast Services

The number of mobile devices incorporating IEEE Std. 802.11 is steadily growing and new enhanced broadcast services will create new market opportunities.

 

This amendment extends the reach of wireless local area network (WLAN) to markets and use cases that require efficient distribution of local information such as:

·         Information announcement systems in public locations, e.g., airports, stadium, etc.

·         Sensor information collection, e.g., asset tracking

·         Non-safety related transportation applications operating in unlicensed bands

·         Multi-media broadcast

 

Some of the new enhanced broadcast use cases have requirements for protecting broadcast traffic and the privacy of the stations receiving that traffic, in ways that are not addressed by the current standard.

 

The current IEEE Std. 802.11 has a group temporal key security association (GTKSA) security framework for multicast that does not protect origin authenticity between devices having that GTKSA. Such protection is needed in some broadcast use cases.

Current IEEE 802.11 wireless access in vehicular environments (WAVE) technology for V2X applications is based on IEEE Std 802.11™-2016 operating in 5.9 GHz band, which was originally standardized as IEEE Std 802.11p™-2010, and which, in turn, derived from the OFDM PHY as defined in clause 17 of  IEEE Std 802.11™-2016 (a.k.a. IEEE Std 802.11a™ -1999). WAVE technology has been available for almost a decade, and has been extensively tested and is a proven, mature technology. 

 

During the past decade, IEEE 802.11 technology has improved, from IEEE Std 80211a-2009, to IEEE Std 802.11n-2009, IEEE Std 802.11ac-2013 and the ongoing IEEE P802.11ax amendment, with supported throughput increasing from 54 Mbps to close to 10 Gbps, as well as higher reliability and improved range. To address future needs for V2X communication technology and provide 802.11-based future-proof technology for V2X applications, the definition of new V2X mechamisms based on new and existing, proven IEEE 802.11 WLAN PHY/MAC technologies, are needed.
