One minor supplement to the notice Paul forwarded.
There is one further level of approval.
(From our context, this was RevCom. It still has to go to the SASB)
That is the "not done until November" that Brian refers to.
The 802 Milestone still has to be approved by the IEEE BoD at its November meeting. It should just go through.

Dear Geoff Thompson,

 

It gives me great pleasure to inform you that the IEEE History Committee has voted to recommend approval of your milestone proposal to the IEEE Board of Directors.

 

We expect that the proposal will be submitted to the IEEE Board of Directors at its upcoming 19-20 November meeting. The Board of Directors will vote whether to give final approval of the milestone.

 

In the course of evaluating milestone proposals, the committee sometimes makes changes to the text of the citation for clarity, length, or style.  The citation which will be  recommended to the Board of Directors by the History Committee is:

 

 Origin of the IEEE 802 Family of Networking Standards, 1980-1999


The necessity to standardize computer Local Area Networks (LANs) resulted in the IEEE Computer Society sponsoring LAN Standard Project 802 in 1980. Four 802 Working Groups formed by 1999 proved particularly successful and transformative: IEEE 802.1 (Bridging), IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet), IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi®), and IEEE 802.15 (Wireless Personal Area Networks). IEEE 802 standards defined ever-expanding networking speeds and features, thus enabling the seamless interconnection of computing devices worldwide.

 

Please respond to me as soon as possible to confirm that the above citation is correct so that I may submit it to the Board of Directors agenda. If I do not hear from you, I will assume that the citation is correct.
