Statement: >Cabletron is now pushing the IEEE 802.10 vLAN support on their products. Response: "Cabletron is fully committed to following and developing an IEEE standard for vLAN implementation and interoperabilty. At this point in time, it is our view, that it is too early in the process to be committed to any implementation style as the 802.1 group as a whole is the forum to define this". Statement: >There is already considerable momentum behind using 802.10 for secured vLANs >(e.g. BayNetworks, UB Networks etc. are also actively working on it). Thus I >would like to see the vendor community work now with the 802.10 Committee to >incorporate provisions for secured virtual networks (which could coexist with >host based implementations), into the Standard via the V-Bit extension we >discussed with Russ. Response: In response to the mail message concerning changes to 802.10 standard,it would appear to be premature to have the 802.10 group manipulate their standard to support a "non-standard" approach to vLAN implementation at this point. Although there may be certain vendor support for 802.10 tagging, the 802.1 group is the forum to decide on implementation styles (which has not happened yet) before existing standards are changed if needed at all.
