I don't believe we clearly distinguished between cases when frames are tagged and when frames are not tagged. We did talk about tagging across backbones and for some VLANs tagging may be end to end. The default VLAN would/could be for untagged frames passing through or for the forwarding of the first frame until a VLAN determination is made. There are classes of frames, such as the get nearest server frame that Novell clients generate, that may not be easily placed into a VLAN. The default VLAN can be used to forward these frames until the Novell server responds with a network address.
