----------------- 802.1p status ------------------- HISTORY P802.1p first draft circulated in 1995. Current draft, D3, circulated in May `96, describes: 1) Filtering services in Bridged LANs; 2) Modifications to Forwarding Process to allow traffic class expediting based on multiple queues & extension of FDB to represent priority information; 3) Description of filtering services; 4) Protocol definitions (GARP) to provide filtering services; 5) Management operations; 6) Place-holder sections for management protocol, performance annexes etc. PROGRESS SINCE LA JOLLA MEETING (03/95) Development of D3, including the following major changes: 1) Re-definition of Priority handling, to allow greater control by Administrators 2) Inclusion of "JoinAll" mechanism, to propagate filtering mode information and allow for promiscuous receivers (e.g., routers, sniffers); 3) Inclusion of Management Operation definitions. D3 circulated for 30-day working group ballot. Good response; 100% "disapprove", primarily based on issues related to commonality/consistency with ongoing work in 802.1Q. The biggest issue here relates to priority signalling methods. Draft Disposition of ballot comments s circulated end June `96, with summary of comments and issues raised. ACTIONS PLANNED FOR TWENTE MEETING (07/96): 1) Review & resolve ballot issues, as documented in the draft Disposition document; 2) Develop Instructions to the Editor for revision of the document (revised Disposition document), to be followed by publication by the Editor of P802.1p/D4 for WG ballot mid-August `96. -------------------- 802.1Q status ------------------ HISTORY P802.1Q first draft circulated in June 1996. Current draft, D1, circulated in July `96, is largely a "framework" for the Draft standard, with some initial text describing: 1) VLAN architecture; 2) Operation of the Forwarding Process; 3) Priority handling; 4) VLAN Tagging frame formats; 5) Spanning Tree issues and options; 6) VLAN Grammars; 7) Place-holder sections for the other topics that must be covered by the Standard. MAJOR ISSUES TO BE RESOLVED: 1) Boundaries/overlaps beween p & Q. The major ones are: 1) Priority signalling - how done, where documented; 2) Protocol requirements - any requirements Q may have which may require "unblocking" in p; 2) Clarification of the A vs B formats for Token Ring/FDDI tagging, and definition of the set of encapsulation/decapsulation/translation rules for any pairing of source/destination media; 3) Relationship between VLANs and Spanning Tree (1:1, N:1, N:N, "Two Layered" approach, etc?) 4) And many more... ACTIONS PLANNED FOR TWENTE MEETING (07/96): 1) Resolve issues; 2) Review D1 and develop instructions to the Editing Team to generate D2, to be circulated to 802.1 in August/September timeframe. ------------------ 802.1d status --------------- HISTORY Standard 802.1D first published in 1990; re-published as ISO/IEC 10038 in 1993, with SRT annexes added. P802.1d/D11 circulated in May 1996. This document defines a set of deltas to the 1993 edition of 802.1D, required in order to revise the document for its 5-year re-affirmation. The majority of the corrections to the text involve typos and minor technical clarifications. MAJOR ISSUES TO BE RESOLVED: 1) Any boundary issues beween p & d?; 2) ?? ACTIONS PLANNED FOR TWENTE MEETING (07/96): 1) Resolve issues; 2) Review D11; 3) Develop instructions to the Editor to generate D12, if deemed necessary before balloting; 4) Instruct Editor to circulate D11 or D12 to 802.1 for ballot in August/September timeframe.
