18. ADDITIONAL NOTES: This project will replace an existing project, P802.1y, that was defined as a maintenance amendment to 802.1D-1998. As 802.1D already has 2 amendments, and as it gets increasingly difficult to maintain standards with multiple amendments, the working group considered it appropriate to raise a new PAR for a revision that would consolidate existing amendments and make maintenance changes, rather than generate a further amendment. 802.1D is due for reaffirmation in 2003, so it is also timely to revise the standrd at this point. The P802.1y PAR will now be withdrawn.
