P802.1 notes that although the change made has a technical impact, in that it relaxes the conformance requirements, it is not thought to be necessary to repeat the confirmation ballot since the purpose of the change is to align the text with the new consensus in LMSC as a whole on the status of requirements to implement management protocols. Proposed: Keen Second: Slager Yes:16 No:0 Abstain:2 ---------- P802.1 requests that the sponsor ballot text on Managed Objects for MAC Bridges, P802.1j/D6, be submitted as a contribution to ISO/IEC JCT 1/SC 6/WG 1 at their forthcoming meeting in Foz do Iguaca, Brazil, for information in their work on MAC bridging. Scope,Purpose and explanation (attachments A,B, and C, P802.1- 95/072) A motion was put before 802.1 to use this material to produce a PAR. There was a motion was made by Karl Shimada to table this motion until after the agenda item discussing an interim meeting for 802.1. Andy Davis seconded. This motion to table was defeated. Yes=7 No=9 Abstain=2 A vote was then taken to instruct Bill to compose a PAR... using attachment A&B. ------------ Resolve that: 802.1 requests its Secretariat to prepare and submit a PAR for P802.1Q "Standard for Virtual Bridged Local Area Networks" with the following Scope (Attachment A) and Purpose (Attachment B). 802.1 further approves the interpretations of these Scope and Purpose clauses contained in Attachment C for future reference in Working Group discussion. Proposed: Seaman Seconded: Keen Yes:14 No:1 Abstain:4 ------------ Attachment A: Scope of Proposed Project: To develop an architecture and bridge (-1-) protocols for the logical partitioning of a Bridged Local Area Network (-1-, -2-, -3-) that provides separate instances of the MAC service (-4-) to administratively defined groups of users, independent of physical location. The architecture and protocols will be compatible and interoperable with existing Bridged Local Area Network equipment and will support a range of implementations. To define basic management of the groups. This project will not include explicit consideration or development of multiple active paths within a VLAN, enhanced quality of service, or security facilities. However it will not preclude their eventual development except as restricted by (-1-). -1- ISO/IEC 10038, ANSI/IEEE Std. 802.1D. -2- ANSI/IEEE Std. 802.1D Annex C. -3- P802.1G -4- ISO/IEC 15802-1, ISO/IEC 10039. ------------ Attachment B: Purpose of Proposed Project: The set of technologies known as Virtual LANs provide the equivalent of separate LANs over a single bridged LAN. Despite user demand there is currently no interoperability between different vendors, nor a coherent management framework for different techniques. This Standard will provide an architecture, protocols, and mappings for bridges to provide that interoperability and consistent management. ------------ Attachment C: Interpretations In Scope - "Users" includes the notion of different protocols in the same endstation using different VLANs. "Administratively defined" includes a wide range of user administrative choices from equipment purchase, through policy setting, static configuration, in-band and out of band management, and automatic configuration guided by policy choice. Logical partitioning of a Bridged Local Area Network by VLAN mechanisms may be an appropriate element in a comprehensive system of user security. However, an explicit orientation of VLAN to security may conflict with primary goals of ease of use, and would be a significant addition to the scope of this project. Further work in this area may take place under a separate PAR at an appropriate time. Consideration and accommodation of bridging techniques based on 802.1D (e.g., 802.5r Annex K) is within the scope of this PAR. "Compatible and interoperable" includes the idea that new bridges implementing 802.1Q can be intermixed with existing 802.1D bridges in configurations with require the latter to forward but not interpret VLAN information. "Multiple active paths within a VLAN" means multiple active paths between the same two users. ------------ 9. MAC Bridging - Seaman ...nothing on this agenda item... 10. SSG Report - Boal John Boal reported on the activities of the Strategic Study Group. ( See P802.1-95/074) A Motion was made: --------------------- Resolve to: Request the chairman of 802.1 to oppose the formation of a Strategic Planning Advisory Group for the purpose stated at the present time. The resulting draft, P802/D22, is to be distributed for Working Group ballot by 802.1 and Liaisons, to close before the March1996 meeting of LMSC. Proposed: Keen Seconded: Chin Yes:16 No:0 Abstain: 1 12. 802.1p/D1,D2: Traffic Class Expediting & Dynamic Multicast Filtering - Jeffree Tony reported on the status of the subject Draft Standard. Status of Draft Standard for Traffic Class and Dynamic Multicast Filterint Services in Bridges Local Area Networks P802.1p/D1, November 9, 1995 - P802.1-95/06 History: P802.1p/D0 published September 1995. D0 describes: 1) Filtering services in Bridges LANs; 2) Modifications to Forwarding Process to allow traffic class expediting based on multiple queues & extension of FDB to represent priority information; 3) Place-holder sections for management, protocol, performance annexes, etc. Progress in Montreal Meeting: Development and presentation of proposed protocol for multicast group registration and for distribution of registration information. P802.1p/D1 to be published November 9, 1995, with the following changes: 1) Clarification of the text in section 2.6 to make it more apparent where the dividing line exists between description of the existing 802.1D Filtering services and the new "multimedia" services; 2) Minor clarification changes in section 3; 3) Addition of protocol description for group address registration. deregistration, included as new section 9, Group Address Registration Protocol. This description is in an early stage of development; expect a more complete description (fill state table sspansions, procedural description etc.) in Draft 2. Future Actions: P802.1p/D2, to be published after Montreal meeting, will contain a more complete description of the protocol (full state table expansions, procedural descriptions etc.). Likely timetable: 1) P802.1p/D2 to be published in Nov-Dec 1995 time frame via 802.1 FTP server. 2) Further discussion/revision of the draft at next meeting of 802.1 in March 1996, followed by publication of P802.1p/D3 for initial 802.1 ballot. ---------------------- 802.1 instructs the Editor of P802.1p, Tony Jeffree, to produce revision P802.1p/D2, based upon the following inputs: 1) Comments received during the Montreal meeting with respect to the contents of P802.1p/D1; 2) Comments received via the 802.1 Email exploder, before mid-December15; 3) Expansion by the Editor of the existing state diagram diagrams to generate full state tables for the operation of the protocol; 4) Expansion by the Editor of other existing place holders in the document. The revised draft will be made available via the 802.1 FTP server, in PostScript format, before the end of December 1995. Moved: Jeffree Seconded: Hart Yes:14 No:0 Abstain:2 13.
