Background

Ultra High Reliability is a new Study Group within the IEEE 802.11 working group that will investigate PHY and MAC technologies to improve reliability of WLAN connectivity, reduce latencies, increase manageability, increase throughput including at different SNR levels and reduce device level power consumption. The intention is to lead to the creation of a task group with a target start in May 2023.

The study group has been created in July 2022 and first meeting will happen in September 2022.

Goals

March 2023

We had 3 meeting sessions at the March meeting.

A motion on inclusion of mmWave operating bands in the scope of UHR failed (50/50). A strawpoll on defining integrated operation on mmWave in a separate Study Group received strong support and was then later motioned by the working group and will be created under the name of IMMW (Integrated mmWave).

Following these agreements, we finalized the UHR PAR and CSD documents (https://mentor.ieee.org/802.11/dcn/23/11-23-0480-00-0uhr-uhr-proposed-par.pdf, https://mentor.ieee.org/802.11/dcn/23/11-23-0079-05-0uhr-uhr-draft-proposed-csd.docx) and reached agreement on these documents (PAR motion: 243y, 13n, 16a; CSD motion: 250y, 4n, 13a).

July 2023

We had 5 meeting sessions at the July meeting. Priority was put into providing responses to comments from other WG on 802.11bn PAR and CSD documents. We updated 802.11bn PAR and CSD based on comments (PAR motion: 130Y, 4N, 11A, CSD motion: 129Y, 0N, 11A).

The 802.11bn PAR was eventually approved by the 802 EC.

We also went over 21 contributions focused on technical proposals addressing the PAR KPIs.
