WLAN Intelligent Networking (WIN) is a new Study Group within the IEEE 802.11 working group that will investigate PHY and MAC technologies to increase throughput, to improve the predictability of latency, and to better adapt to emerging application requirements such as from AI traffic or services. The intention is to lead to the creation of a task group with a target start in May 2027.
The study group has been created in July 2026 and first meeting happened in September 2026.
The goal of the IEEE 802.11 WIN Study Group is to produce a PAR and a CSD document for the creation of a task group. First WG approval of the PAR and CSD is targeted in January 2027, and final approval in March 2027.
In addition to creating the PAR and CSD, the purpose of the Study Group will be to continue discussions and the development of alignment on:
- Objectives and targets/KPI’s
- Potential technologies to be considered
- Naming of the task group
- 26/1440r4 – Beyond bn SG preparation
- 26/1437r0 – Considerations on a WINning next gen. mainstream Wi-Fi

We had 4 meeting sessions at the September meeting and went over 27 technical presentations covering different topics:
- Use cases and requirements
- Misc technical
- PAR/CSD
A first draft PAR (26/1834) was presented together with a PAR discussion deck (26/1859), as well as a first CSD proposal (26/1806). Discussion on naming the amendment was also initiated (26/1826).
General alignment remains on capacity/throughput improvements and latency determinism as the core objectives. Latency determinism was the dominant technical theme, and physical AI and robotics as key use cases.
Ross Jian Yu was confirmed as secretary of the WIN SG.
