The closing report of RCM TIG has been posted:

Background: Randomized and changing MAC addresses

RCM TIG is an initiative within the IEEE 802.11 working group that will consider the merits and challenges presented by randomized and changing MAC addresses within an 802.11-based network, with particular considerations to already existing or upcoming deployments of such randomized and changing MAC addresses, including in non-802.11-based networks. The initiative started in the May 2019 meeting.

Goals of TIG

The TIG will consider at privacy and other aspects of how randomized and changing MAC addresses are currently used in different networking standards, and assess whether any recommendations are needed for network operators or changes are required to the IEEE 802.11 standard as per the TIGs assesssment, bearing in mind changes that were introduced to the 802.11 standard following amendment .11aq. September 2019

The Randomized and changing MAC address TIG is meeting three times in Hanoi, Vietnam on September 15-20, 2019, on Tuesday PM1 and EVE and Thursday AM1.

The RCM TIG met three times during this week.

The group reviewed four submissions with text contributions for the draft report, an outline of which was published in August. Discussion on draft report and consideration of potential further text contributions (in particular finalizing the recommendations to the WG as a result of the TIG's work) will be undertaken in teleconferences in October, requested for Noon ET on Tuesday October 15, and Noon ET on Tuesday October 29, and in the November F2F in Waikoloa, US.

July 2019

The Randomized and changing MAC address TIG is meeting two times in Vienna, Austria on July 15-19, 2019, on Wednesday PM1 and Thursday AM1.

The RCM TIG met two times during this week.

The group reviewed five submissions. A first time-line and process for producing the outline of a draft report was discussed and tentatively agreed:

  • August: Outline of the draft report (headlines).
  • September: Discussion on outline of draft report based on individual contributions for text chunks for the draft report (provided in good time before the meeting). Produce a first draft report.
  • November: wrapping up the work (tentatively).

May 2019

The Randomized and changing MAC address TIG met for the first time in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 13-17, 2019.

The group reviewed four submissions, including 11-19-0179-02-0arc (not available on RCM TIG mentor). Mark Hamilton (Ruckus/ARRIS) was appointed vice-chair.
