[STDS-802-11-TGBQ] Discussion on 25/2081(mmWave Link Management - follow up)

Hi Jonghoe, Cheng, Abhishek, Bilal, Hongwon, Edward, and all,

The contribution 25/2081r0, available at the following link, has been presented and discussed in the teleconference call on 16 December.

https://mentor.ieee.org/802.11/dcn/25/11-25-2081-00-00bq-mmwave-link-management-followup.pptx

Thanks for your questions and comments during the discussion. The main questions, comments and answers are shown as follows.

Q&C-1: there exists a beam establishment (or BFT) procedure to be specified. Whether is it needed to define a procedure for reachability verification?

A1: Reachability verification is used to evaluate whether the IMMW AP is reachable for the IMMW non-AP MLD. And the beam establishment procedure may be composed of different stages depending on the scenario. As a reference, currently specified DMG BFT consists of a SLS phase and BRP phase.

The reachability verification can be part of beam establishment (or BFT), and it may be in the initial stage of the procedure. I think that reachability verification is very important for IMMW MLD as the sub-7GHz link and mmWave link have different coverage range.

Q&C-2: Without doing beamforming it cannot be decided whether mmWave link is reachable or not. Is it correct?

A2: I check the current definition of BF, that is used by a pair of STAs to achieve the necessary DMG link budget for subsequent communication. In my opinion, only if reachability verification passes then it seems to be feasible to find a better link budget for the communication, and it is also agreed that it may be part of BF, the detail of which depends on discussion.

Q&C-3: The periodic transmission is still under some conditions. For example, what if there are no non-AP STAs nearby. If there is no non-AP STA requesting setting up the mmWave link, the periodic transmission doesn’t make sense.

A3: In some cases the periodic transmission would be very useful, especially for reachability verification if the non-AP STAs want to use mmWave link for data frame exchanges. And I understand your concern, we can make the mechanism more flexible to make it suitable to different scenarios.

Q&C-4: for option3(indication of pending/expected transmission on mmWave link during a time interval), what is the intention? it seems to be opportunistic.

A4: For option 3, IMMW AP MLD can indicate on sub-7GHz link whether there are transmissions on mmWave link and the info for the expected transmissions (e.g. the antenna ID, sector ID) if present. The intention is that IMMW non-AP MLD can use this info to do reachability verification on mmWave link.

For example, if there exist pending transmissions (e.g. data transmissions) on mmWave link, IMMW non-AP MLD can directly utilize the info signaled on the sub-7GHz link. In this case it is indeed opportunistic. If required IMMW AP MLD can also schedule some PPDU transmission on the mmWave link when there is no pending data transmission.

Based on the request in this meeting, I open this thread for further discussion on this contribution.

Please share your further questions/comments/feedback on this contribution in this thread.

Thanks.

Best regards,

Liuming Lu

Dear TGbq participants,

As discussed in our teleconference call on 2 December 2025, we will run motions on a few technical contributions in our next teleconference call on 16 December 2025.

The list of motions planned is shown from slide 12 to slide 18 of the compendium of motions slide deck at:
https://mentor.ieee.org/802.11/dcn/25/11-25-2163-04-00bq-tgbq-compendium-of-motions.pptx

Please kindly review and let me know if there is any last-minute change.  In addition, if you are the mover of a motion, please kindly attend the call.

Thanks and Regards,
Edward
