Followings are guide of Daejoen -> Incheon

By Limousine Bus

1. Lotte City Hotel -> Daejeon Complex Terminal

A. Use Taxi

B. Travel Time: 20 min

C. Price: ₩7,000 (6$)

2. Daejeon Complex Terminal -> Incheon International Airport

A. Use Limousine Bus

B. Travel Time: 3 hrs. (Time interval 10-20 min,

03:20 ~ 19:10)

C. Price: ₩24,000 ~ \28,000 (21$ ~ 25$)

D. We strongly suggest reserving a ticket in advance if you want to get on the bus early morning

By Train (KTX)

1. Lotte City Hotel -> Daejeon Station

A. Taxi is preferred

B. Travel Time: 20 min

C. Price: ₩8,000 ~ \9,000 (7$ ~ 8$)

2. Daejeon Station -> Incheon International Airport

A. Use KTX train

B. Travel Time: 2 hr. (Time interval 1-2 hr, Time table in Appendix 2)

C. Price: ₩36,000 ~ \50,000 (32$ ~ 45$)

D. You can reserve a ticket on following page

Hi.

A few folks have been unicasting me, and during the course, I found some information which may be of interest to others as well.

So, many of you seem to be asking

· Should I reserve the train ticket in advance, or should I just try my luck on the spot?

· The first direct train is ~2hrs after my flight arrives. Should I really wait that much long at the airport, or plan on going to Seoul Train Station and catching something from there?

· Train from Seoul to Daejeon is only 1 hrs. But the train from ICN to Daejeon is 2 hrs. Why so long?

Now, some bits and pieces of information:

1. The KTX from ICN to Daejeon actually first goes to the Seoul Train Station, then goes to Daejeon. It takes 44 min to Seoul (this part of the track is not ‘fast’), and 1hr to Daejeon from there. Thus ~2 hrs in total.

2. There are other trains from ICN to Seoul Train Station, such as the Express train (http://www.arex.or.kr/content.do?url="">)

a. This is operated by a different company than the one operating KTX. This does not require prior reservation.

b. There is also the subway, but that takes much longer. So I would not recommend.

3. You can switch your KTX ticket to another one ‘earlier’ in time (if seats are available)

4. The train station at the ICN refuses to say how much time is required between your flight arrival and the train departure

a. They don’t want to be responsible for you missing the KTX

Based on this, if I were you, I would probably

· Reserve a KTX from ICN to Daejeon w/ ample time after your flight arrival

o What is ‘ample’ time is up to you. J I personally would leave > 1.5 hr just to be safe.

· If you have a lot of time left after arriving at ICN, check w/ the KTX ticket office at ICN to see if there is an earlier KTX available from the Seoul Station (not ICN) to Daejeon you could catch

o If there is one available, then exchange your KTX ticket to that. Note that since your new KTX would probably be only from Seoul (not ICN) to Daejeon, you will probably get some refund, w/ some penalty. There is no penalty in changing to an earlier train. Just penalty in refund for the difference.

· Buy a separate ticket for the express train to Seoul Train Station (at a different ticket office, but probably near each other?), and go to Seoul Train Station. Then, transfer to KTX for Daejeon.

o You cannot exchange your KTX ticket to the Express train – different companies.

Of course, you could just choose to wait at ICN until your reserved KTX leaves.

And, for what it's worth, all trains from Seoul to Daejon on my day of arrival (4th from 16:00 onwards are aparently sold out) - so if you are expecting to travel by train - please reserve now.

Just to add on a bit more.

· According to the train reservation office, the direct train from the ICN airport to Daejeon is less crowded than a train from Seoul Station to Daejeon in general. Of course, there is never a ‘guarantee’ that seats would be available. For example, they told me most trains from ICN to Daejeon have seats available today when I talked to them a few hours ago, but it seems sold out now online. But this week is a ‘holiday’ week in Korea…

o If you are afraid of your flight being delayed, and willing to take the bus if you cannot get a seat on the train, you could just try buying the train ticket at the airport w/o prior reservation.

· The bus company did not pick up the phone. But the airport information desk claims many foreigners do take the bus to Daejeon. (I personally am fine with taking the bus – just wasn’t sure if they would be ‘English language’ friendly.)

o Bob Heile’s email had a good link for the bus (http://www.incheon.guide/search/label/Daejeon )

o Basically, there are two types of buses to Daejeon – Daejeon (Deluxe) bus and Daejeon (Sejong City) Bus.

§ You should take the “Daejeon (Deluxe) Bus” as it is slightly faster (does not stop at Sejong City) and is a ‘better’ bus (wider seats).

o As Adrian noted, the bus does NOT have a stop near the Daejeon Convention Center (NOT within walking distance)

§ It does stop near the OLD convention center, as well as the Daejeon government complex.

§ While the above two stops are both ~2km away from the convention center for the IEEE meeting, it seems that the bus stop is just at the “side of the road”, not a “terminal”. You will probably then have to hail a taxi from the side of the road.

§ While there is nothing wrong with hailing a taxi from the side of the road, if that is not your preference, then you could wait until the last stop of the bus, which is the Daejeon Dongboo Bus Terminal Center. This is ~6 km away from the IEEE convention center, and I presume it would be easier for you to get a taxi as it is a bus “terminal”. I have attached an updated destination name sheet, where I added the “Daejeon Dongboo Bus Terminal”.

o There is no need to reserve the bus in advance

§ While reservation is possible, the reaction from the information desk was like - ‘you want to reserve the bus?’ Also, there are 2~3 buses per hour, and they set aside some seats for walk-up customers. So you should be able to get a seat within reasonable amount of time even w/o reservation.

o Just be careful when the bus takes a restroom stop – Remember your bus! There will be many buses which look alike.

· A word on taxis

o In Seoul, there are largely two types of taxis – the ‘regular’ taxi and the ‘deluxe’ (black) taxi

§ The deluxe taxi can by identified by their black exterior color. These are more expensive, but tend to be nicer drivers and better service.

§ The regular taxis have various colors (other than black). I usually take these. But the drivers are ‘better racers’. J

o I ‘read’ on internet that Daejeon has only the regular taxis, and not the deluxe.

o Most (all?) taxis (at least in Seoul) take credit cards. But I had a few occasions where my international credit card did not go through. Not sure if it was because of my international credit card, or just bad luck with the credit card machine.

Hi Graham,

The ticket isn’t available in the next train.

You can change the ticket for next train at ticket counter with a cancellation fee.

(15% before 20 minutes after departure time of the train, 40% before 60 minutes, 70% after 60 minutes)

Final question to anyone familiar with the route,

“If I book a train ticket I see that I must choose a particular time. If the plane is delayed and I miss that train, can I still use the ticket on the next train?”

For example, I arrive at 3.05pm, theoretically, so I could choose the 4.30pm train. If the plane is late or I get stuck in arrivals, could I still use my ticket for the next train, or indeed a non-direct train? Or have I misunderstood the reservation scheme? Or is it better not to book in advance? What please is recommendation?

Sorry to be a nuisance but maybe others will benefit also from the replies.

That's right, Graham.
The first stop is the Daeduk Convention Centre - which is where the convention centre used to be.

Taking the train and taxi is an alternative. I looked at the schedules, and looking for a ride at 17:00,
I get into the hotel 30 minutes earlier taking the bus route - because the trains are not as frequent.

Dear 802.11 members,
(Fourth attempt at posting).
 
 There has been some confusion about where the bus from Incheon to 
Daejeon stops.
The first stop of the bus stops at
the old convention center,  which is about 2km from the one we are 
meeting at.
 
 
 
 The second stop of the bus is the Government Complex - again about 2km 
from the meeting.  
 
 
 
 
 
From there you can take a taxi to your hotel.  Google maps 
also says there's a bus
every 15 minutes that covers this route.
