On 21 September 2022, Canada ISED began a public consultation on the
Spectrum Outlook 2022 to 2026.
Of potential interests to us are:
[1] Paragraph 17
The following 5 policy themes are highlighted:
1) Spectrum as an economic driver and enabler of Industry 4.0
2) Rural connectivity in the wake of COVID-19
3) Indigenous connectivity
4) Spectrum, 5G and climate change
5) Competition and wireless affordability
[2] Paragraph 22
IoT is mentioned. "ISED is seeking to ensure the availability of spectrum that supports the emergence of Internet of Things (IoT) devices that provide wireless-enabled services in all sectors of the economy."
[3] Paragraph 31
Industry 4.0 by Wi-Fi as a key enabler candidate is mentioned. "While experts believe that the future of 5G is a key enabler for Industry 4.0, there are several wireless technologies emerging as key enabler candidates, including Wi-Fi 6E and 5G New Radio-Unlicensed (NR-U) in licence-exempt spectrum bands, and 4G Long-Term Evolution (LTE) and 5G in licensed spectrum bands."

Low-cost spectrum for supporting rural connectivity, including Wi-Fi and TVWS.

"ISED is of the view that spectrum sharing will be a key enabler for meeting the anticipated high demand for spectrum."

Spectrum demand for licence-exempt technologies is discussed. "New applications and technologies for Wi-Fi and the IoT continue to drive demand for licence-exempt spectrum, and ISED’s plans will enable Canadians to take full advantage of this spectrum."

Potential frequency bands for future release and/or consultation. See Table 1 that outlines the bands ISED has identified for release, consultation and/or monitoring between 2022 and 2026, including 5.9 GHz, 6 GHz, 70/80/90 GHz, above 95 GHz.
Also note the following in Table I: Discussions at WRC-19 led to some changes that allowed limited outdoor use in the 5150-5250 MHz portion of the range. Canada did not agree with the imposed limits and took a reservation on this decision. No changes were made to the other bands within this range. ISED is no longer considering this band for review in Spectrum Outlook 2022-2026.
