IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Resilient Packet Ring Study Group Meeting Minutes May 22/23, 2000 in Reston Reporter: Martin Wollensak (List of attendees at the end) May 22, 2000: Item 1: Mike Takefman presented on behalf of Albert Herrera parallel activities happening at IETF to coordinate L2/L3 issues (http://www.ieee802.org/rprsg/public/may22_interim/rprsg_ietf.pdf). Item 2: Alan Hurren presented the Nortel implementation of a resilient packet ring called InterWan (http://www.ieee802.org/rprsg/public/may22_interim/rprsg_ipt_overview.pdf). - Details of header formats missing (like DPT presentation in Albuquerque). - Ring segments can be as low as OC-1 Item 3: Harry Peng presented InterWan traffic simulations (http://www.ieee802.org/rprsg/public/may22_interim/rprsg_ipt_fairness_sim.pdf). - Discussion: Ring loss-less or not (via packet marking) to support priority? - Discussion: Configured unfairness on the ring - Discussion: Need for agreed traffic models/assumptions to validate proposals. Item 4: BJ Lee presented more detailed DPT traffic simulations (http://www.ieee802.org/rprsg/public/may22_interim/rprsg_bjlee.pdf). - Discussion: Standardization of speeds lower then OC-12. - Discussion: Need for agreed traffic models/assumptions to validate proposals. Item 5: First iteration over project authorization request (based on suggestions by Howard Frazer) - Sponser date: RPRSG is shooting for the IEEE 802 November meeting. The July 17 date (with the 6 weeks notice for the PAR and 5 Criteria draft) was considered to close. - Scope of Proposed Project - Discussion: WAN included - Discussion: Minimum speeds - Intellectual property - Discussion: Existence of patents related to RPRs. First iteration over 5 criteria draft (based on suggestions by Howard Frazer (http://www.ieee802.org/rprsg/public/may22_interim/5criteria.pdf)): Broad Market Potential - Discussion: Are WANs part of the broad market potential. Do we want to include them in the standards effort? Compatibility - Discussion: Ethernet V2, 802.3 LLC/SNAP and support for packets > 1500 bytes (this matters if GigE and 10 GigE phy devices with 1500 byte limitations are used in RPR implementations). - Discussion: Skip 802.1f in favour of IETF RPR MIB - Discussion: What are the compliance criterias for the 802 Overview and Architecture document. - Discussion: Need for VLAN support on RPRs. Distinct Identity - Discussion: What is the minimum ring speed we should start standardization - Discussion: Relation to SCI buses (scalable coherent interface) Technical Feasibility Economic Feasibility May23, 2000: Free discussion what the group would like to standardize if a working group status is achieved: - Quality of service, traffic management towards the ring, on the ring itself. - Media Independence - Should we standardize on specific media - Pick specific media - DWDM - SONET - 10 GigE - GigE - Do we want to define a bus standard Work items: - MAC Logical Interface and Services - PHY Logical Interface and Services - Compliance with 802. Motion 1: - RPRGS will use the following voting rules: - Technical Motions must be passed with >75% approval. - Procedural Motions must be passed with >50% approval. (M) Taylor (S) Alex 19 yes, 0 no, 1 abstain. Motion 2: - RPRSG will allow Internet voting, 802.3 rules to be discussed and voted using an Internet vote. The 802.3 voting rules will be used for approving an RPRSG Internet vote. (M) Lauren (S) Alan (19 yes, 0 no, 0 abstain). Action Items for the next meeting: - Mike Takefman will send archive of existing messages (or pointer) to RPR mailing list. - Mike Takefman making interim PAR and 5 Criteria available to RRPSG members. - Mike Takefman will get definitions of procedural processes in IEEE (see Motion 2). - Mike Takefman presenting a progress report to IEEE 802. - Jason Fan will provide a SCI tutorial. - Nader Vijeh and BJ Lee will look into compliance issues/requirements from IEEE 802 (802.1xx, 802.3xx) - Howard Frazer will clearify how patent issues where handled in earlier project authorization requests. - Khaled Amer will come up with a first cut on performance requirements/metrics for traffic simulations used for validations of RPR proposals. - Lantern will provide a tutorial on what matters to them in RPR standardization (CoS) in the next meeting. - Luminous will provide a tutorial on what matters to them in RPR standardization in the next meeting.
