IEEE 802.24 Vertical Applications TAG Scope

The IEEE 802.24 Vertical Applications Technical Advisory Group (TAG) focuses on application categories that use IEEE 802 technology and are of interest to multiple IEEE 802 WGs and have been assigned to IEEE 802.24 by the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards  Committee.(LMSC)

For those application categories, IEEE 802.24:

• Acts as a liaison and point of contact with industry organizations, other SDOs, government agencies, IEEE societies, etc., for questions regarding the use of 802 standards in those vertical applications.
• Develops white papers, presentations and other documents that do not require a PAR that describe the application of 802 standards to those vertical applications
• Acts as a resource for understanding 802 standards for regulatory agencies and for certification efforts by industry bodies, that require more than one IEEE 802 WG's input.

NOTE: The IEEE 802 technologies are applied to support the vertical applications. IEEE 802.24 determines what makes the horizontal technologies supportive of the applications. IEEE 802.24 also determines what enhancements to the horizontal technologies would improve their ability to support the applications.

Examples of potential vertical application categories are: Smart Grid, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Smart Homes, Smart Cities, eHealth

Ongoing IEEE 802 Strategic Initiative: 802.24 will continue its outreach to representatives of vertical markets interested in communication standardization relevant to their market and appropriate for IEEE 802. The 802.24 TAG offers a venue for stakeholders from vertical markets to identify standards gaps and initiate standardization. New participants with interest in standardization project for vertical applications are welcomed.

• 2024:  802.24 continues development of multiple white papers. 
• The Internet of Things White Paper is in the development stage, with some content and outline. Contributions are welcomed.
• The Low Latency White Paper  is nearing completion with final review and editing.
• The IEEE 802 Solutions for Vertical Applications has been completed and forwarded to IEEE for formatting and publication.
• Development of a new white paper on Communications Standards for Alternate Fuel Vehicles (AFV) is underway. Contributions are welcomed.
• The original Smart Grid White Paper  will be updated and revised. Contributions are welcomed.

• 2023:  802.24 continued development of three white papers. Internet of Things White Paper  Low Latency White Paper   IEEE 802 Solutions for Vertical Applications  and is starting development of a new white paper on communications standards for Alternate Fuel Vehicles (AFV)

• 2021 - 2022:  802.24 continues development of three white papers 

• White Paper on Low Latency capabilities of IEEE 802 standards for Vertical Applications (Document 802.24-19-0003r16 or latest revision) 
• IEEE 802 Networks for Vertical Applications white paper (Document 802.24-22-0011r1 or latest revision)
• Internet of Things (IoT) - Overview White Paper - the TAG is working on merging the original draft 802.24-15-0036r3 with a new contribution 802.24-22-11r1 (or later)

• Starting in 2021:  As an outgrowth of IEEE 802 Strategic Initiatives, 802.24 is initiating outreach to representatives of vertical markets interested in communication standardization relevant to their market and appropriate for IEEE 802. In 2019, the 802.24 TAG facilitated bringing in new vertical markets and stakeholders (transportation, oil/gas, etc.) with needs for standardization of network operation in narrowband licensed spectrum. This resulted in the formation of a new project in 802.15, the 16t project. 802.24 seeks to continue to offer a venue for stakeholders from vertical markets to identify standards gaps and initiate standardization. New participants with interest in standardization project for vertical applications are welcomed.

Getting involved in IEEE 802.24

The IEEE 802.24 Vertical Applications TAG meets during IEEE 802 Plenary sessions. The 802.24.1 Smart Grid TG also meets at Wireless Interim sessions. In addition, conference calls may be announced, as covered under the rules for IEEE 802 TAGs, as defined in the IEEE Project 802 LMSC Operations Manual.
