Copper Ad Hoc Status: At the IEEE 802.3 HSSG meeting in Montreal (July 1999)

the copper ad hoc membership had supported the addition
of
two copper physical layer specifications to the list of HSSG
objectives.
1. Equipment room - short copper

@~10 Gb/s minimum length of 10 meters.
2. Horizontal Cabling - long copper
@ a minimum of 2.5 Gb/s on a minimum
length of 100 meters of category 6 cabling.
In support of these objectives the two motions below were made
at the IEEE HSSG
meeting (Wednesday, July 7, 1999) with the following results.

Motion: Add to the list of objectives: Support a link distance of at least 100 m on category 6 at a
minimum
of ~2.5 Gb/s, if possible.
M: C. Di Minico
S: R. Taborek
Technical (>75%): For: 42 Against: 61 Abstain:

Copper Ad Hoc Next Steps: Based on the outcome of the motions and the continued interest

by adhoc members to develop the 10 meter @~10 Gb/s phy
objective,
I recommend that the Copper Adhoc membership continue the
development
of the 10 meter @~10 Gb/s phy objective through the use of
the copper adhoc
reflector. The Copper Ad Hoc was to be disbanded
after the July meeting but has
been given permission to use the reflector
to develop
proposals for the November plenary.
