[802.3_EMS] Metadata definition

All,

I spoke with Bijan after the call, and he forgot at the time he made the comment that OCP had decided to delete the definition due to deadlines.

During the call David had suggested the more we can add – definition, reference – the better off we would be.

That leaves us with what Kent found in NIST –

One public definition of “Metadata” is from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

See:  https://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/SpecialPublications/NIST.SP.800-150.pdf   page 38

The definition has an end-note pointing to NIST SP 800-53, Revision 4, Security and Privacy Controls for Federal Information Systems and Organizations, April 2013 (updated 01-22-2015). http://dx.doi.org/10.6028/NIST.SP.800-53r4

Reading the definition I am not sure it is what we want.

I did a search and also found this definition from Techterms –

https://techterms.com/definition/metadata.

It looks to me that the definition for metadata will be dependent upon  the application it is used for.

Essentially, the description David Ofelt provided “Data about data” plus some examples relevant to what we intend it for may be the best definition.

So I looked in the IEEE online dictionary –

metadata

·       Data that defines and describes other data.

This was defined as part of 2802-2022 - IEEE Standard for Performance and Safety Evaluation of Artificial Intelligence Based Medical Devices: Terminology

Thoughts?

John
