Re: [802.3_OMEGA] IEEE 802.3cz call today

Steve,

I note the request.  We can discuss in a few minutes on the P802.3cz call.  I slightly modified the proposed agenda to accommodate such a discussion as well as the fact as well as some other items.

Bob,

I would like to ask that you reserve some discussion time on the call agenda today to explore possibilities for moving the IEEE 802.3cz project forward. In your report IEEE 802.3cz report to the IEEE 802.3 WG yesterday, you noted that we are evaluating some possibilities. My personal preference is to split the PAR and move the GIPOF work into a separate project. I firmly believe this is the best path forward for all involved in the multi-gig optical automotive project. If we gain support for splitting the PAR, it would allow:

  • IEEE 802.3cz to move forward with a WG ballot based on OM3 multimode fiber once we have a technically complete draft; I believe this could happen very quickly
  • Allow GIPOF supporters to develop a proposed standard based on GIPOF on a separate timeline that would support a technically complete draft based on this media

As I understand the process, no CFI is required to split the PAR. GIPOF supporters can develop a modified PAR, a new set of objectives that are appropriate for GIPOF and responses to the CSDs. Once the TF is formed, a Chair and Chief Editor can be selected; I also believe this can happen very quickly. I, personally, would support a PAR split moving GIPOF and support the separate TF. I would ask that you confirm that my understanding is correct.

If so, I believe this is the best path forward. We are now behind schedule in our proposed work in IEEE 802.3cz; we have an obligation to develop a completed standard supporting multi-gig optical automotive applications in a timely manner.

My sincere hope is that we can gain support for this proposal at a future meeting of IEEE 802.cz; I also hope is that we can get that support in a timely manner.

Best regards,

Steve
