Short Haul 10G PHY Call for Interest

The following request for agenda time for a "Call for interest" has been received from Mike Mcconnell and Nick van Bavel. It will be discussed at the IEEE 802 LMSC November 2005 Plenary meeting in Vancouver, BC, Canada. If you have any questions please get in touch with either Mike Mcconnell, Nick van Bavel or Bob Grow (Chair 802.3) directly.

IEEE 802.3ak (10GBASE-CX4) was brought to the market to provide a low-latency, short-haul copper cabling solution for 10 Gigabit Ethernet. With IEEE 802.3an (10GBASE-T) nearing completion, the market is starting to demand a 10G solution for short-haul, data-center applications that supports the low-latency, low-power, and low-cost objectives of 10GBASE-CX4, yet runs on affordable, field-configurable twisted pair cable, and is autoneg compatible with other BASE-T PHYs.

High performance shielded or screened twisted pair (STP/FTP) cabling will enable the PHY to meet these difficult and conflicting market requirements at 10G data rates.

Many proprietary short-haul 10G PHY solutions have been announced or are in development, and it is time to form a study group to try and converge the industry to a standards-based solution to support maximum performance, interoperability, compatibility, and compliance.
