During the ad-hoc today I suggested a method to verify the “de-embedding” methodology to compensate for actual versus reference HCB performance and volunteered to send it to this reflector.   The method I proposed is the following.

 

  1. Simulate the “performance” with multiple different channels/packages/transmitters followed by the reference HCB.
  2. Simulate the “performance” with the same channels/packages/transmitters followed by the measured HCB.
  3. Perform the de-embedding from simulation 2 using the measured HCB and reference HCB parameters.
  4. Compare 1 and 3.   They need to be the same within an acceptable measurement accuracy.

 

Note different channels/packages/transmitters should cover a wide range of options that pass or just fail the specifications using simulation 1.   It should include short and long channels, short and long packages and slow and fast transmitters with multiple different Tx FIR settings.

Note “performance” means all the parameters that are specified at the TP2 (copper)/TP1a(C2M AUI (for optical)) interface.

i.e. for 100G specs

Effective Return Loss (ERL)

Signal-to-noise-and distortion ratio (SNDR)

Signal-to-residual-intersymbol-interference ratio, SNRISI

(Less likely to be an issue i.e. lower priority and may not need de-embedding)

Transmitter steady state voltage

Output jitter

JRMS

Even-odd jitter, pk-pk

 

C2M AUI (for Optical) (key parameters)

Differential peak-to-peak output voltage

Eye height

Vertical Eye Closure (VEC)

Effective return loss (ERL)
