[802-LMSC] PES conferences and standards

Colleagues,

For my action item from the workshop, at recent BOG, SASB and CAG meetings I spoke with PES and IAS standards colleagues to better understand how they integrate standards meetings with conferences.  Here is a brief summary of 3 of the bigger conferences:

PES General Meeting (held annually, next is in Austin, TX)

This is managed by PE Society (and run by IEEE CEE) and welcomes ~3000 to the academic conference for ~$600 each.  It is mostly papers, poster sessions and workshops, but there are also about 200 WG meetings for ~600 delegates.  It is worth noting that WGs are per PAR and their meetings are usually short (at most a couple hours each) but there are 10-20 rooms used.   The event is blended such that everyone pays the attendance fee and can attend all aspects.  The WGs also meet separate from the PES General meeting in other clusters that are either small and hosted in the facilities of one company, or are larger and have a meeting fee.

PES T&D conference (held annually, next is in Chicago, IL)

This is managed by PES, but there are no standards meetings at the T&D conference which welcomes ~12,000 attendees with a large exhibition.

IAS PCIC (held annually, next is in Dallas, TX)

This is managed by IAS and welcomes ~500 to the academic conference for ~$600 each.  It is mostly papers, poster sessions and workshops, but there are also about 20 WG meetings for ~100 delegates but spread across only 2-3 rooms.   Again the WG meetings are per PAR and span from an hour to 16 hours.  There is no fee required if you just attend the standards meeting.

My conclusion is that PES and IAS use conferences as a way to tie the standards closer to the industry and academia.  On a small scale (like PCIC) the standards meetings are free for participants.  But on a larger scale (like PES GM) they are not.  As a result, this is not a way for LMSC to fund our meetings directly.  However, it would be a way potentially allow more direct engagement with industry or academia.

Cheers,

Glenn.
