Subject: One down, one to go

I am pleased to announce that the IEEE802 SEC has approved
The formation of the 802.17 Resilient Packet Ring working
group subject to approval by NESCOM in December.

The vote to approve was unanimous (11/0/0) and in particular
we received praise from both Howard Frazier (Recording
Secretary) for our hard work and from Geoff Thompson
(802.3 Chair) for working diligently to address the concerns
of 802.3.

I would like to extend my thanks to all of you who have
been attending the study group meetings and working hard
at drafting our PAR and 5 Criteria.

I was appointed interim Chair until the first plenary
meeting where we will vote for all of the executive officers.
The executive officers are: Chair; Vice Chair; Secretary;
Webmaster. We will vote for editors once we get a sense
of just how much editing will be required. I would like
people to declare their interest for positions at the
January 16/17 meeting so that people can get to know
them.

The SEC reminded us that membership (voting rights!)
in 802.17 will accrue automatically to all people who
attend the first plenary meeting and participate for
at least 75% of the meeting.

The preliminary (interim) meeting that will be held
January 16/17 DOES NOT accrue voting rights nor does it
count towards membership.

The decision on venue for January will be made shortly.
Please watch the reflector and the web-site for the
announcement. I would appreciate an email from people
to let me know whether they will attend or not. This
will help us get a sense of how large a meeting room
is required.

I will attempt to get the 802.17 web-site running, although
it will have to wait until after the approval by
NESCOM. Anyone wanting to volunteer to help me do
this would be appreciated.

congratulations!

mike
