Thanks Gary,
You said it in much more illustrative way.

Devendra's point is a good issue.
In my opinion, RPR is another instance of well accepted LAN standards
practice where a "LAN" protocol includes both a MAC layer and several
PHYs -- layers properly diced into sublayers as required.
RPR is not a LAN per se, but concept is the same whether LAN, MAN, WAN
or GAN (Global Area Network) or LEOAN (Low Earth Orbit Area Network).
Make no small plans.
I don't see RPR running atop a SONET BLSR, as that would obviate a
need for RPR. If, however, some applications/users of RPR would
benefit from transporting RPR over SONET, then RPR Resiliency would
necessarily be handled at/above the Path layer. This could be done.
The interface would be similar to the WIS in 10GbE with resiliency
info passed upward into RPR MAC layer. From the view of RPR, SONET/SDH
would be reduced to a transparent (Path-layer) point to point protocol.
Should this be on the requirements list? Probably would enhance
acceptance of RPR into ILEC markets. My suggestion is to put this on
the list to discuss.
Regardless of the answer to the above, for fault detection and
performance management, some of the features/capabilities of SONET/SDH
need to be inherited into RPR's PHY -- e.g., physical link performance
monitoring. A subset of features of the G.709 Optical Channel Digital
Wrapper could be selected that would insure interoperability with OTN
and would also be sympatico with RPR over SONET/SDH.
I suggest that this also be on the list to investigate.
Acceptance of the above would make a protocol stack that shows RPR MAC
atop two PHYs -- a SONET/SDH "WIS-like" PHY, and a naked lambda PHY.
As usual, the naked lambda PHY might itself have several nuances for
different wavelengths, distances, etc.
Best regards,
Gary Nelson
