Date: 2-25-01
Re: IEEE 802.17 Secretary Position
Candidate: Mannix O'Connor
My name is Mannix O'Connor and I offer my services for consideration as
Secretary of the IEEE 802.17 Working Group. The RPR standard has the
potential to be a significant force in the networking industry. Your
efforts to define this technology deserve a serious, experienced and
dispassionate Secretary. I would be pleased to support you in this role. I
have worked for chip companies and systems vendors. I've worked with
service providers building huge public data networks and I have managed a
group of 30 Systems Engineers and salespeople. All of these roles required
that I build consensus in challenging environments. This experience would
be valuable for our task with RPR.
1.0 My Principles
As Secretary my work would embody the following characteristics:
Clear - Presented in a way that makes it easy to get the information you
need
Prompt - Documentation available as soon as possible
Precise - Words and transcriptions that capture the speakers meaning and
motions, as well as documents available when and where they are required.
Impartial - Transparent documentation and actions that are subject to no
bias and represent the actual event/discussion/decision/motion, etc...
Efficient - Concise documents that require a minimum of time to locate, read
and digest
2.0 Standards Experience
Optical Internetworking Forum
I was an early member of and participant in the Optical Internetworking
Forum.
Gigabit Ethernet Standard
I was part of a team that developed the packet bursting technology that we
contributed to the IEEE 802.3z Gigabit Ethernet efforts in 1996.
RPR Alliance
Currently, I am an officer of the RPR Alliance where we are working to
educate the market regarding the potential benefits of the work being done
in the IEEE 802.17.
3.0 Business Background
I have a wide variety of experience is LAN, MAN, WAN data networking.
Recently, I was VP of Marketing and National Sales manager at a company that
built active optical components (lasers, transceivers) and systems (switches
and routers).
In the early 1990s I was with the company that developed and commercialized
Ethernet hubs for use in Enterprise networks. Prior to that I did systems
integration in the early days of Novell and Banyan LANs.
