[rprsg] IEEE 802.17 Vice Chair Candidate - Yong Kim
Dear RPR Colleagues,
My name is Yong Kim. I am announcing my candidacy for the
vice-chair position of 802.17, and would like to ask for your support.
My entire career of 20+ years is in IEEE 802 (and FDDI) specific
communication field as an implementer. I have been active contributor,
editor, sub-task chair, liaison to other 802 working group, etc, in IEEE
802 as well as TCCC/LMSC for the most of this duration.
I believe I have the necessary experience and expertise to meet the
802.17 Working Group's challenges ahead. We already have diverse
proposals and respective objectives. This condition is not new in 802:
10BASE-F, 10BASE-T, 100BASE-T within 802.3 as well as 802.3 versus 802.12,
802.1d bridging versus Source Routing, and 10GE. Each time, we have
worked through the differing opinions and built consensus, based on 802
rules. Consensus does not mean complete agreement. Consensus means that
the best technical solution is chosen through agreed process.
I am very familiar with Robert's Rules of Order; how IEEE 802 has used
it, and how it has been sometimes intentionally misused. I also have been
a part of consensus based decision process with diversity of controversy.
My relevant technical background and qualification is as follows:
IEEE 802.3 CSMA/CD: (Since 1984)
Intimate expertise in 10BASE5, 10BASE2, 10Broad36, Repeaters,
100BASE-T, VLAN and Port Aggregation, 100BASE-X, and on going 10GE.
Standardization of 10BASE-FB as a principal advocate, sub-task
chair and editor. One of the authors of Network Systems Tutorial.
IEEE 802.1 Bridging: (Since 1987)
Broad knowledge of all facets of 802.1, Bridging, Spanning Tree,
Source Routing, VLAN, Multiple Spanning Tree, Priority at Layer 2,
etc. Official liaison to 802.1 from 802.3 for two years.
IEEE 802.4 Token Bus: Circa 1987~88
Developer of the first and probably the last Ethernet to Token Bus Bridge.
IEEE 802.5 Token Ring/FDDI (Since 1989)
Observer of TR and FDDI.
Whether or not I am elected, I will continue to be an active and
contributing
member of 802.17. I believe, though, I could contribute far more toward our
common goal as the vice chair by using proven-effective tools and processes
during the meetings, and working out logistics and issues in between
meetings.
I ask for your support.
best regards,
Yong.
