G’day all

Just a reminder to reply if you want to make a submission or have an influence on the time a teleconference is held …

Subject: [STDS-802-11] Message for Coexistence SC participants

--- This message came from the IEEE 802.11 Working Group Reflector ---

G’day all

The Coexistence SC is currently focusing on issues of relevance to revision of EN 301 893 by ETSI BRAN. The next ETSI BRAN meeting is being held in early December, and so we have a great opportunity to develop and agree on any IEEE 802 input to that meeting between now and then both via teleconferences and at our meeting in Orlando

There are a number of obvious relevant topics for possible discussion

·        Dual threshold

o   IEEE 802 has already sent a LS to ETSI BRAN asking that the dual threshold option be made available to 802.11ax (and other technologies)

o   The WFA has supported this LS with a LS of their own to ETSI BRAN

o   I don’t think there is much more to be said on this topic at this point, although further input on this topic is certainly welcome

·        Neutral preamble

o   It is believed by many that defining a neutral preamble in EN 301 893 (albeit one aligned with 802.11) is more technology neutral than the current approach of referencing 802.11 in EN 30 893

o   Certainly a neutral preamble will make the PD mechanism more accessible to non 802.11 based system, which was a goal highlighted in the dual threshold LS

o   It is understood that an 802.11 participant is intending to make a proposal directly to ETSI BRAN for a neutral preamble

o   If desired, the  Coex SC is available to review any proposals and suggest refinements before the ETSI BRAN meeting

·        Spatial reuse

o   Spatial reuse as envisaged in 802.11ax is not allowed under the current EN 301 893 rules

o   There was some discussion on a possible conceptual solution (without no detail specified) in Hawaii but no agreement

o   I understand that at least two additional solutions were discussed in the corridor

o   Spatial reuse seems like a topic ripe for further  discussion

·        Blocking energy

o   IEEE 802 has expressed a view on blocking energy to 3GPP on a number of occasions

o   A proposed LS to ETSI BRAN was scheduled for discussion last week but was not reached in the agenda

o   This remains a deeply controversial topic in both ETSI BRAN and the Coex SC

o   This topic will be scheduled for discussion in either the teleconferences or in Orlando or both

·        Less rules , more innovation?

o   It was noted during discussion on spatial reuse and the proposed new MAC mechanism that we could avoid all these discussions if there were less rules in EN 301 893

o   The benefit of less rules is more unrestricted innovation

o   The downside is there is less protection from “bad players”, with some asserting this protection has already been of benefit to Wi-Fi

o   I am sure someone would like to take this topic further

·        MulteFire

o   Most of the Coex SC’s focus so far has been coexistence with LAA

o   However, there are other technologies too, such as MulteFire

o   The problem is that many of us do not understand MulteFire well enough to evaluate any coexistence risks

o   Would anyone like to assist the Coex SC evaluate any coexistence issues between MulteFire and Wi-Fi?

·        … and any other topics I missed

I would like to call a teleconference for some time during the week of 2 October

·        It will be held on Tue, Wed or Thu (US time)

·        It will be held at a time that avoids 12am-5am anywhere on earth

·        I will give priority in terms of better dates/times to those who provide submissions for discussion

o   I am guessing a likely time is:

§  6am in AEST

§  3pm in US ET

§  9pm in Europe

My requests right now are:

·        Do you want to participate in a teleconference?

·        Will you have a submission for a teleconference?

o   What is the topic?

§  So far, I am aware of submissions on spatial reuse and blocking energy.

o   When will your submission be ready?

·        Are there any dates/times you will not be available for a teleconference?

o   Please use US ET

PS Guido, when will the draft Hawaii meeting notes be available?
